I once saw an old girlfriend six months later at a country music performance. I immediately had a pain like someone stabbing me in the guts. My first thought was, “Oh, no, I’m going to die from a cliché.”

We are the audience at a horror movie, saying “NO. don’t open that door!”

And again, I ask, how did she turn out so brilliant and relatively stable, with a PhD and twins? (Notice, I did not say “normal”; there is no normal, and having her water break as her doctorate is being conferred is not exactly normal.)
