I am fond of the “There’s no Planet B” meme (despite the comment by Toles’ alter-ego)
I’m also not of the opinion than enough climate change to make it really hard to maintain our society… or even human society at all… is equivalent to the end of the world. But I understand that few humans REALLY believe they aren’t the center of the world.
I remember when Conservatives — being conservative — took the appropriate action, prepared for the worst, and were in good shape when things went wrong unlike their thoughtless peers, but NOW …
When my boys become men Covid-19 and the Orange Buffoon will be distant memories (remember air raid drills?) but climate change will be a daily reality. They will be justified if they curse the memories of us.
It’s a cartoon cliche (or trope, meme, or whatever) to present a thirsty man or woman crawling in a hot desert. Virgil Partch (1916 – 1984), who signed his work “ViP” was basically a gag cartoonist whose art appeared in the 1940s through 1970s. He often used this cliche, as I remember, in his comic strip, “Big George!” His work was not ever politically inclined, as far as I know.
But certainly the cliche has been used many times to comment on various social issues, usually minor, and commonly in a humorous way. (The humor editor of “The New Yorker” once refused to print such cartoons as too ubiquitous.) And now it can be validly used in a serious way toward commentary about global climate change.
I’m certain Toles is aware of the traditional use of this cliche, and decided to appropriate it for good use in his own commentary. I wonder if he was once a fan of Partch’s work? Their drawing styles are so different.
There is a nice article concerning Virgil Partch at “The Comics Journal.com” by R. C. Harvey from 2013. As a teenager, I often imitated Partch’s distinctive drawing style — and the styles of Pat Olphant and George Herriman, as well — in school class presentations. (A pleasant wave of nostalgia passes over and floats me back temporarily to those days …)

Fossil Abuse – {4 beats/line}
The earthlings’ leaders were too deranged
to cope with the fact that the climate they’d changed, -
- so they kept the deal which they’d long since arranged
{tho’ Mother Nature was ignored and estranged,
and creatures’ shelf-life was severely shortchanged}.

Venus makes a cute comment. It’s its global warming that makes it hotter than Mercury, and Mercury has virtually no atmosphere to sustain its heat.
