Buying a belt as a gift can be dangerous. My mother told a story of how, on her first job, she was tasked with buying a belt for the boss. Since he was a large man, she bought the largest belt she could find—a size 50. He was large, but not that large, and he was offended. Fortunately, it didn’t cost her her job.

“Dressed down” is an interesting idiom to use under the circumstances.
