Why has the ‘entertainment’ industry made clowns so evil and scary? I used to love them, but just my best to ignore them. They are not just frightening they are ugly.
Puppets are okay, these kids are too young to remember Shari Lewis and Lambchop, Kukla Fran and Ollie or all the wonderful characters in the world of Fred Rogers….. On the other hand I can see the kids might have seen “It” or simply commericials for “It” which would definitely seed a phobia of clowns in the minds of many youngsters……
This hits home – as a child, I was afraid of puppets. I think it stemmed from an episode of 3 Stooges (obviously in re-runs) where there was a creepy puppet that would pop up next to peoples’ beds!
It is a fact universally acknowledged that Muppets are the only puppets that aren’t creepy (well, Elmo’s creepy but not because he’s a puppet). Nobody knows why this is, however; even puppets that are designed to look like Muppets but are not Muppets, like the ones in the Grocery Outlet Bargain Market commercials, are creepy.
I think the logic is clear enough, but one doesn’t have to interact with ventriloquists’ dummies (even as a possibility) and puppets have the advantage over clowns of being small.
The Buckethead is only one-third right. Puppets are just fine (one of the earliest experiences I recall was with puppet grand opera— https://tinyurl.com/yxtwznvb —), and clowns as I remember them are okay (evil clowns began to show up in movies long before the It films, with “Killer Clowns from Outer Space” 1988 after the Stephen King novel but before its film adaptations); but ventriloquist dummies have always been creepy and frequently outright evil….

I’ve always been a huge fan of puppets (which I consider ventriloquist dummies a subcategory of), but then again, I tend to like clowns too.

The puppet theater was a nice gift to the school – with no strings attached

Clown make-up (overdone) reminds me of Mz. Avis in “One Big Happy”! She walks around with an Avon Demonstrater satchel!

i’ve always thought the height of creepy would be a clown ventriloquist with a clown dummy (and, mind you, i love both clowns and ventriloquists)…

Spawn of the Devil. Puppets are the root of all evil. Trust me on this one.

I never could understand the fear of clowns, but then again as a as a young man in a bad neighborhood I developed a fear of crabs…
