Umm. OK? Looks to me as if sports are a giant IQ test. A lot of us seem to be passing that particular test. Though a lot of us are quite apparently failing several closely related tests.
Plenty of refuge for the “blue lives matter” bunch and the nauseating genteel “all lives matter” group without the arenas. Racism is so deeply entrenched in American society that whites can’t even see how insidiously ingrained it is in the fabric of everyday life.
Remember when Kap taking a knee was the big political battle? Turned out Kap was right but now we have large demonstrations daily…. the majority is silent no longer and Trump has a lot to account for but sports seem almost totally irrelevant now… except for the guys who took a knee at the beginning of the MLB season… maybe after this election and the pandemic winds down, people will view sports for what it is…. an entertainment distraction, not the center of attention.
Gee, Ted, kind of a obtuse construction. Saving all of your good work for the upcoming HRC Senate hearings, version 5003? I’m sure you’ll find something to pick on her about.
But people can still sit in their houses watching sports on TV. Not the petri dish of team sports, though. I suggest fencing. To steal from the internet, in fencing, if some tries to get within 6 feet of you, you stab them.
I majored in political science and have been a participant in American politics since the I campaigned for McGovern in Wisconsin during Spring Break, the first year I was eligible to vote. Started reading history/politics regularly in 8th grade, six years after my first season in organized baseball and one year after my first seasons in middle school football and basketball. I remain interested and motivated by both politics (have never changed the societal goals which motivated me to be a McGovern supporter in ‘72) and sports (still enjoy all sports, play handball regularly — although it is often solo, due to scarcity of that sports participants).
There is nothing inherently wrong about sports or their participants. There can be, and is in many instances, things wrong with sports, particularly college exploitation of athletes and professional owners. And more than a few pro athletes are dicks, similar to all societal occupations.
Since Colin Kaepernick pro football players and women’s pro soccer/basketball players, in particular, have taken advantage of the platform their sports offers to contribute, at no small financial/reputation risk to themselves, to the cause of justice economic/social in America (as Dr. King accurately noted, all justice will best be served by 1st attaining economic justice).
Since the Floyd death and similar police executions over the most recent several years, more and more pro athletes have stepped forward. College athletes recently have as well. These people have more ability to influence the public than I have, and they risk more personally than I do when I attend rallies or marches or write something on some type of online platform.
I seldom find justification for specific instances people cite as examples of deplatforming. But unless I’m reading this ‘toon incorrectly, it is intended not only to dismiss sports as, I don’t know, stupid or something similarly asinine — its intent is also to deplatform athletes.
Ah, it’s true. I remember many a time when the Emperor would host a round of games at the Coliseum to placate the mobs gathering at the Forum. Good times.
