I’m with Bub on this: I had no reason to ever think about Hello Kitty. Not even enough to form an opinion about it. In my life that kind of over the top kitsch (not derogative, just as a classification including Family Circus or Love Is…) just has no significance whatsoever.

“Hello Kitty” really means “Hello Demon”. They say that anyone who buys Hello Kitty merchandise is welcoming the Devil into their hearts. Satanists all over the world use Hello Kitty as a secret symbol and many of them actually tattoo the image on their skin.

Ask me if I care. Do you care? Funny you should ask, but no.

That announcement about Hello Kitty was actually made 5 or 6 years ago…

After a huge public outcry and millions of upset little girls…

the Sanrio corporation had to roll it back, a few months later…

The official word… not very enlightening, though… was “It’s going too far to say that Hello Kitty is not a cat. Hello Kitty is the personification of a cat.”

What does that mean? They couldn’t explain.

My interpretation is “Don’t be mad at us…. call her a cat if you want to.”

    BTW… Big Pickle… I hope you’re being facetious!

That “Hello Demon” stuff apparently started as a joke on a satirical Spanish language website…

    and some people believed it!

I don’t know anything about Hello Kitty, but I would surmise that she is supposed to be an anthropomorphized cat as opposed to just a cartoon cat. Consider the difference between Goofy and Pluto in Disney cartoons. In one sense, Goofy is a dog just as Mickey is a mouse. But they walk upright, have hands, drive cars, wear clothes, speak English, and have paying jobs: in that respect (Sanrio might say) they count as adult men. Pluto goes on all fours, wears only a dog collar, and barks: he’s just a dog.

One of Tara Charendoff’s first jobs was giving voice to Hello Kitty in a 1987 tv series when she was 13. Tara later married a Mr Strong and took his name and has since given voice to characters as diverse as Timmy Turner, Batgirl and Princess Twilight Sparkle. So Hello Kitty is at least 33 years old.
