Kale baby food is considered unusual punishment in most places.

Judging by her face, I’d say mom is making one of her “creative” casseroles again.

QUOTE from the ABOUT page: “Elly spends a lot of time slaving over a hot oven cooking heavy, salty, indigestible stews and casseroles because she thinks that she’s showing her creative side. Her family does not appreciate these culinary atrocities.”

I used to feed my baby sister Sour Patch Kids. She’d make exactly these faces and run away— then come back 10 seconds later for more!

It looks like April and Elizabeth are growing up pretty fast. Elizabeth is even wearing glasses.

@howtheduck is it me or are these comics a bit out of order. I went back to 91 when John was spending time with April/a talk with Elly about communication and realized that we’re supposed to be getting the back to school arc with Liz wearing makeup, not John feeding April new foods. Do you think their saving that or next week or are they getting scraped because it’ll remind parents of COVID.

The funniest family video we have is when I was feeding my son Wheatena for the first time. Not my choice of baby food, but we were staying at my in-laws and that was the only cereal they had. Son was 9 months at that time. The FACES!!! OMG!!! We were ROLLING!

Maybe it is just me but it seems that ‘April’ in growing awfulllly fast—after all she is only 5 months old. None of my girls could sit in a ‘high chair’ when 5 months old.

    Lynn’s Comments:

This was so much fun to draw. When I look at this strip again, I remember drawing it in pencil and looking forward to tracing it with pen and ink. Feeling the bite of pen nib on paper and seeing the lines become the characters was like “bringing them to life.” April (as a baby) and the dogs were an absolute joy to work on.

As a mother, I was too invested in mealtimes to enjoy the experience that much. I had the pleasure of helping our son give his younger son maybe his first taste of solid food and got some good chuckles. He thought his wife should have left him some instructions. In fact, he didn’t even remember his first son’s early meals at all!

I would love to see the reactions of John and Elizabeth after being served some of that white lightning moonshine.

Reminds me of how our oldest son reacted when we first gave him a taste of orange juice (diluted something like 1-5 with water) and he shook his entire body like he had just ingested a whole sour lemon!

My son went from laying down to walking (completely skipped the crawling stage) then he went from breast-milk and formula to “adult” food because I couldn’t get him to eat ANY of the baby food on the market. We went to Walmart and stocked up on every brand and flavor we could from organic to regular and he refused to eat ANY of them. I was exasperated and worried. He kept drinking his formula and eating his baby cookies but wouldn’t eat baby FOOD.

I called my mom in TEARS not knowing what to do and she said, “Tell me, what are you and [my husband’s name] eating for dinner tonight?” I said, “Chicken and mashed potatoes” and she replied, “Then feed [my child’s name] that!” So I did and my son LOVED it. All of those bottles of baby food went to waste.
