Last week on a day-off from work at the grocery store, Dad and I went to Lewis County, Washington primarily to wash my mother’s gravestone (as the next day would’ve been her birthday). Side trips included a tour of the high school from where my older brother and I graduated in 2001 and ‘03 respectively and where Dad was principal. Since it was under renovation, the gym and auditorium were separate rooms and will still be. It was a public high school mind y’all.
Not anymore – I had some computer trouble yesterday and had to use my older notebook with the broken keyboard (used an external one via USB). Hard drive ok, RAM ok – when it finally decided to show me some innards it turned out that the file system was corrupt. On a very, very deep level. Risky to choose to restore it manually, but it worked…
I find that interesting. I went to an old High School built in 1928. Public school; not a rich community. They had a vaudeville-like auditorium, a gymnasium and a separate lunch room. Later, during my baby-boom years, they expanded the school to make more classrooms and a second (new) gym! Oh, and we also had air-raid/bomb shelters which doubled as our locker rooms!
The gym, auditorium, and cafeteria were separate buildings in my little hometown back in the 60s. However, the high school and the Junior High school shared those buildings.
I’m pretty sure the gym in my grade school doubled as not only the auditorium but also the cafeteria. But that was a long time ago, and memories of my school days are not exactly cherished.
My small-town high school had double gyms, separate boys and girls swimming pools, and a LARGE auditorium. I believe it was built back in the twenties. Today it has been transformed into apartments. Now I could sleep in my old classroom.
Heck, I went to a private school and we had a hoop hanging in front of the stage at one end and under the balcony at the other end. The hallway had a bunch of those giant rolling carts with folding chairs.
