One thing about reading Pickles is that it makes me grateful to have a husband who cooks, cleans, does his own laundry, mows the yard, and can repair most anything. I case you wonder I also cook, clean, do my own laundry, landscaping, animal care, and gardening.
I told my dad once that my husband has turned into him. He looked like a peacock, he was so proud. I said, Dad, it wasn’t a compliment. I’ve already told my future son-in-law, he is NOT to turn into my husband!
He reminds me of my eldest sister’s husband, who has never been on his own; went from home to a frathouse to being married. I don’t think he even grills.
You’d think that Earl would have learned to choose his words more carefully. Things my husband has learned in the last 2 months: Do not sit at the dinner table expectantly while I run around getting dinner. Do not ask if dinner’s almost ready. Do not agree to a Zoom meeting at 5:30. Actually there’s quite a list. All of this Earl should already know.
Since the death of my life partner earlier this year, I find this rather poignant. In spite of the last illness, and in spite of the infirmity that came before that which made me a caretaker for almost 3 years, I’d like to gently tell Earl about few things he may come to miss in times to come.
The trick is to ask like this: “Anything I can do to help, dear?” … this, results in a response much like “Umm. Can you go pick some flowers? Oh, wait… No, I think it’s covered.” I do wash the dishes though. And when I’m the cook, she stays out of my way… and washes the dishes.

Imagine being an animal that eats 17 year cicadas. That’s a lot of waiting.

Try living alone. If you just wait for it, you won’t get fed.

But sometimes, it’s worth the wait in gold.

I guess Earl does not realize that he has the same life.

It is amazing how everyone forgets that it was Earl who worked for a living so Opal could have everything she wanted.
