I was born on May 7. Harry S Truman was born on May 8. (Different century, tho.) I always harbored a small grudge against him that he declared VE day on his own birthday instead of mine. That was it, tho. I generally thot he did a good job otherwise, including integrating the military, authorizing the Marshall Plan for rebuilding Europe and the Berlin Airlift, relying on the UN rather than unilateralism to handle the Korean Conflict, and most of all reinvigorating a nation and economy devastated by a quarter-century of depression and war.
Obviously the most colossal black mark on his record was authorizing the A-bombing of the civilian populations of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but considering he didn’t even know about the existence of the A-bomb until he inherited the presidency 4 months before those fateful days, it’s not clear he truly understood what he was doing.
A humble man (with much to be humble about, as Churchill once remarked to him about his own successor, Clement Attlee), Truman was not full of his own self-importance. Compared to his current successor ….
This was the big war, your WWII my friend. This was one we was in, we wanted to win, and we won. This wasn’t no police action, no draw. This here was your War. We wanted to win -we won.
I was watching BBC America tonight and old news film from VE day was shown. I marvelled at the great throngs of people out in the streets – and climbing statues! Elizabeth and Margaret were out there mingling with the people according to Elizabeth’s voiceover. I would never have expected that.
God will be having a field day when Trump dies and goes to meet his Maker! He’ll make sure old Donnie is way socially distanced from everyone in heaven!
Yes it was, but I invoked it on this year’s 75th anniversary of the Allied victory over the Nazis in Europe.
It’s like hoisting the American flag on any other day other than Flag Day (June 14th) or Independence Day (July 4th), or akin to celebrating Presidents’ Day in February on the same day for U.S. presidents who had different birthdays.
In 1945, Americans were celebrating victory across the nation on May 8th over the defeat of the Nazis in Europe, just like they were celebrating on August 14th of the same year over the unconditional surrender of Imperial Japan.
It’s an iconic image regardless of date, and Is employed here with artistic licensea—a typical device used by editorial cartoonists.
I invoked this famous 1945 icon photograph for this year’s May 8th VE Day 75th anniversary of the Allied victory over the Nazis in Europe.
I did so although the photo, as correctly noted above by a sharp-eyed reader, was actually taken of spontaneous celebrations that took place in New York City following the unconditional surrender of Imperial Japan on August 14, 1945 (which became known as “VJ Day,” as In “Victory over Japan.”
I confess that I initially and incorrectly assigned the cartoon image to VE Day when it was actually used from a photo taken on VJ Day.
My bad, especially since I once lived in Hiroshima and Okinawa, visited Nagasaki, and speak Japanese.

Don’t grab her and kiss her. Be like Trump, grab her between the legs and brag about it.

That said, let’s not forget that it was also considered by the woman who was kissed to be a forcible act imposed on her against her wishes.
