Having said that, I went back to the syndicate site to take a look, and they had removed the repaired version, leaving only the fuzzy white blotch one up on the site.

The problem with the fuzzy blob was that it noticeably broke through the solid outline of the drawing.
Because The Thinker is a sharply carved statue, it has a clean, strong shape. While I didn’t do I completely black line in the repair, I filled it in enough to maintain the surface continuity.
Plus, one tends to see reflections on hard surfaces that are projecting outward. By contrast, indentions contain shadows that don’t reflect as much light.
Please note that not only is the word “cops” plural, at the end of the sentence in the talk bubble there is a string of dots, indicating continuation. . . .
