First of all, this is something of limited use. It is intended for intubated patients — those who already have a large tube down their throat to the point where the airway passage splits to left and right lungs.

Will this help kill viruses in your lungs? Not at all likely.

Ever see how complex lungs are? They are that way to get the maximum area for absorption of oxygen (and emission of CO2) in that volume. This means that any light entering from above the lungs is going to be scattered or absorbed in a relatively small volume of the lungs. So the light will have only a small effect (unless the virus is close to the trachea).

It will also do nothing for the virus hiding out in your kidney, liver, heart, etc. which will enter the lungs through your bloodstream.

Is this totally useless? No, it has a use!

Infections from intubation are a problem. They tend to become focal spots for infection. So, using this UVA light on the tubes — which are generally of a transparent plastic, will help reduce the risk of infection in intubated patients.

So it is a good thing, but is being totally over-hyped by people who have no knowledge of medicine — like Trump.
