We had a big family, so my mom always boiled FIVE dozen eggs, and we each got to dye a whole dozen. Then, the adults would hide all 60 of them, and we’d run to gather. The only rule was that older kids weren’t allowed to get eggs that were in plain view. I believe that there was no occasion on which we found them all on Easter day. Though a week or so later, it was usually pretty obvious where the missing one(s) (were).
When it was my turn to hide them (only 24), we lost two the first year. After that, I kept a list of where they were.
When I was young “Grama” would take my brother and me out before breakfast iinto the woods by our house and build a nest for the Easter Bunny to deliver the “goods”. We’d very carefully gather moss and leaves to make a soft nest so the eggs wouldn’t get damaged. Dad would go during breakfast to make sure the bunny had done his thing. After breakfast we’d all go out to find what was in our nest. I must have been six at the time. My brother’s nest had treats and mine was empty. I had to go searching. The trauma that the bunny would forget me did a lot to shape me. That was over sixty years ago. Dad thought it was funny
I remember once when we had a family reunion at Easter and instead of coloring eggs, the moms decided to just wrap them in foil, which worked until the sun came out and it looked like a field of diamonds……no left over unfound eggs that year.
About 2 weeks after the grandkids have their indoor Easter morning egg hunt here, I’m the one that finds that last egg. I always take a picture and post it on Facebook. Last year I beat all records. End of June, I found an egg inside a Hibiscus pot which we had moved outside in May! I should have left it for this year.
That is not cool. Those kids messing with the nest will scare away the bird parents, and the eggs will never hatch. Plus, you really want a kid to climb out on that limb to get the egg? Doubly not cool.

Hope the bird doesn’t try to hatch that egg.

I remember once finding an elusive Easter egg we missed…a few months later!

I used to always assume “Easter Egg Hunts” used candy eggs. Where’s the thrill of hunting for boiled eggs?
