The Knight Life by Keith Knight for July 25, 2021

That’s how I remember SF in May 1967 on my way to Vietnam.

Mark Twain once said the coldest winter he ever felt was a summer in San Francisco.

I’m from the Bay Area too (That’s why Knight is my hero and one of my favorite cartoonists of all time). He is NOT kidding! Even with the climate change, SF can still get all kinds of chilly even in the dead of summer. It has it’s warm days, of course, don’t get it twisted; but if you plan to spend your day there, at least bring a sweater to tie around your waist.

I spent one summer back in the 60s, counseling at a summer camp near Modesto, which is hot! Then we got a couple of new horses trailered in from the Bay Area—those poor beasties still had their winter coat, and boy howdy, did they ever suffer—sweating while standing still in the shade. They shed out within a couple of weeks, but until then, they were not happy campers.

Hubby’s from the Bay Area, and we lived there for 16 years. We rarely needed a/c and didn’t turn up the heat much. It was a nice climate. We had everything we needed as well.

My wife and I went on vacation to San Francisco in the winter of 1974. At one point we sat in on a talk wherein the speaker started off by apologizing for the cold, rainy weather. I smiled, raised my hand and said, “We’re here from the knee-deep in snow, sub-zero weather of Minnesota. This is fine by us.”

Keef grew up in Massachusetts, I don’t know why he thinks SF is cold. Nothing like New England in February. Cold mixed with damp, finds its way through anything you’re wearing.

Born in San Francisco and raised in the Bay Area. But haven’t lived there in years due to military service and government work. I’ve always considered it my true home and definitely remember the crazy temps we have there.

The Bay Area is remarkable. You could leave SF in the morning and it’s in the 50s and foggy, drive east and by the time you’re in Livermore, it’s pushing 100 and desert-dry

Pretty sure that “foggy & 50” is the city motto. Any time of year.

Playing frisbee for about an hour on a beach not far from San Francisco, I was comfortable in shorts and a tee shirt, no sweat. I did get a sunburn though.

Dang, I think I saw Mr. Knight down in the Mission district back in the late 80’s.

“I arrived in S.F. wearing a thong.”

It caused quite a commotion at the airport, but at least nobody asked him if he was carrying any out-of-state produce.
