Your art inspired me to start looking, and it didn’t take long to find some names and history from World War I that should be remembered. For your readers, here are just a few:
Calvin Atchavit
Joseph Oklahombi
Charles Lola
(I also have to call attention to Francis Pegahmagabow of Canada, who was a very impressive soldier who went on to be a strong leader and rights activist.)
I have always been humbled by the contributions to the U.S. by those denied the fruits of democracy. Indians, Blacks, Japanese-Americans, and others rose above the hatred to serve during wartime.
Great work, as we’ve come to know, Marty! Very Well Done!
And a very Happy Native American Heritage Month to you and yours. The appreciation of this Nation was long overdue, and done with respect in spite of those like tRump who try to diminish the importance of Native Americans to our culture.
I do recall that in a recent movie there was a Native American carrying a pump shotgun much like Mr Two Bulls depicts today. Thank you for bringing them to the fore.
Note: Black Americans could not fight in much of the war. So some of them went to France and dressed in French Uniforms with U.S. symbols and fought since France didn’t have a problem that the U.S. did then.
One day last summer while I was working in my garden, I heard a beautiful piece of music and came inside to find out what it was. The piece was titled “Benedictus” from “The Armed Man. A Mass for Peace”. It was written by Karl Jenkins as a tribute to the victims of Kosovo. It is a fitting piece for this day.
