The entirety of the federal debt is the consequence of accumulated Republican fiscal mis-management, including massive deficits, first under Reagan and Bush Sr and then, following Clinton’s transformation of then-record deficits into record surpluses, Bush Jr came along and transformed the record Clinton surpluses back into new record deficits, with two unfunded wars, tax cuts and corporate welfare for the few richest elites and lack of oversight over financial and capital markets leading to an economic collapse. (Dick Cheney famously counseled Bush Jr that “Reagan proved that deficits don’t matter.”)

Then Obama came along and rescued us from the Bush economic free fall and could have done even more if he hadn’t faced unprecedented Republican obstruction and filibuster abuse as he tried to FIX what THEY BROKE. Despite this unprecedented obstruction, Obama has had amazing success in cutting back the size of government, reducing by 2/3 the record deficits he had inherited from Reagan/Bush/Bush with a record 84 consecutive months of job gains.

The only two presidents to achieve balanced budgets in the last SIXTY YEARS were LBJ (despite the costs of the Vietnam War, Apollo Space program and War on Poverty, while he had a 70% top marginal tax rate) and Bill Clinton, who had four straight surplus budgets after he passed Reinventing Government (REIGO) without one single Republican vote.

Only one more in the last 50 years has even reduced the annual budget deficit — Barack Obama — who slashed deficits every year after his first, with the cumulative total cut by more than two thirds off, to one third the amount he inherited from Bush Jr., though he never made it all the way to a surplus.

And now, once again, Trump is following the Bush Jr play book (Cheney: “Reagan proved deficits don’t matter”), and has blown up the deficits and debts to new stratospheric levels.

Lisa, it wasn’t the Dems that has blown up the deficit 27% THIS YEAR ALONE with that $1.5 trillion tax cut that benefited the 1%. And by next year, under the Trump Regime, we will hit over 1 trillion. We know exactly who that goblin is.

Thank you, LBenson, for pointing out that the national debt has increased approximately $2 trillion dollars since Hair Groppenfuror took office. He obviously treats public funds the same as his own and thinks he can declare bankruptcy for the U.S. to wipe out the national debt.

All thanks to Trump and the Republican congress. or are you complaining now that the Democrats took over the House after that stunt? Typical tactic; Republicans raise the debt into oblivion and blame Democrats when they are elected to fix it.

ANYONE who tries to cut spending will be voted out of office! Remember the little old lady in the wheelchair being pushed of the cliff in the TV ads? Until there is some BIPARTISAN support for spending cuts nothing will happen, and what are the chances of ANYTHING bipartisan happening in Washington will IMPEACH and RESISTANCE is happening? And if the spend-happy Democrats win the Presidency the trend will get even worse!

Lisa’s right, the national debt is the real boogie man to be fought against. Unfortunately, Lisa usually thinks the debt is only the Dems fault and ignores the Repubs role in its rise. By vastly increasing military spending and reducing income through the tax cut for the wealthy, the Repubs have their hand to the tiller of the latest increase to the national debt. It’ll take another Dem takeover to right the ship of state and lead us out of the dept quagmire.

Now, I know the Repubs are going to point to the medicare for all plans that speak of raising income taxes by 40-50%, and I understand that. That’s why I suggest a more modest healthcare plan that would pay for doctor’s care, prescriptions, and outpatient treatment. All the rest would be taken care of by private companies doing supplemental plans. Or, we could just make the ACA the kind of healthcare that it was intended to be.

So for the last several Democratic administrations, the reduction in the deficits was a fluke or a borrowing of fake facts from the Republicans? When the Republicans were in charge of all three branches, their chances of reducing the national debt had wonderful odds. No one could derail their spending cuts or a change of focus for entitlement funds. So, WHY DID THE DEFICITS ACTUALLY INCREASE SO DRAMATICALLY?

Don’t look to the president for an effective means of dealing with the National Debt. He’s rich due to his dad’s largesse. Trump’s dad once sent an accountant to Atlantic City to purchase $3.35 Million worth of poker chips so that he could make a payment on a loan that he had no money or credit to pay:

The problem with the budget has always been guns or butter even though Democrat presidents are constitutionally responsible for national defense as well. Democrats seem to believe we are still protected by two oceans in spite of the fact bad guys have the same aerial stuff anymore we do and of course druggists and other bad guys pass through the southern border like it wasn’t even there. Trump still thinks we need to at least keep stay up with what the Russians, Chinese, Iran and others are up to and spend what is necessary to do that and Democrats have no intention of giving up any free stuff programs, thereby the national debt problem. Once The Democrats regain power the only new military stuff designed to obliterate large chunks of land will come from them not us. Even if we completely eliminated the Defense department there won’t be enough “other people’s money” plus whoever is still willing to lend us to pay for all the free stuff Bernie, Liz, el al have in mind. Buckle your seat belts it’s gonna be a rough ride.

White House officials ramp up new tax cut talks, as Trump seeks sharp contrast with 2020 Democrats

Not one peep has been mentioned about the deficit since Trump took office. Spineless Ryan was spewing from the mountain tops about Obama growing the deficit after the great recession. Now according to the Orange wonder we have record employment and investment and yet he added 1TRILLION to the debt. Vote the GOP out!!
