Mike- It is possible that the “kids” have been reading the official reports from the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) that states that global warming should be kept to a maximum of 1.5 degrees C above pre-industrial levels to prevent additional droughts, floods, extreme heat, hurricanes and poverty for hundreds of millions of people. Currently the rise in temperature level is just above 1 degree C, but is expected to rise to higher levels given the huge increase in carbon dioxide and the melting of the permafrost and the growing energy demands by China and India, not to mention the underdeveloped nations.
They could have also read September 2018 report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that states that by 2100 the temperature rise will be seven degrees! Seven degrees would be catastrophic, but that is what the Trump administration is predicting.
You should pay more attention to the “kids” than just repeating the Exxon/Fox News/Trump/Putin talking points.
On this issue, I suspect that the “kids” are smarter and more informed than their parents..
I’ve been handing out candy to kids for decades. The range of comments goes from “Thank you!” to “Can I have some more?” Don’t know where you live mike but I suspect this only happens in your fantasies.
https://thebfd.co.nz/2019/10/500-scientists-tell-un-there-is-no-climate-emergency/On the same day that Greta Thunberg made an impassioned speech to the UN about her fears of a climate emergency, some 500 scientists sent a registered letter to the UN Secretary-General stating that there is no climate emergency and climate policies should be designed to benefit the lives of people.
Is it understood that the 12 years, or 10 years, is not the time left to live, but the time left to mitigate the crisis so that it doesn’t become a catastrophe? Well, it’s not understood by Lester, but he doesn’t understand much.
One of the characteristics of homo sapiens is the ability to imagine the future. Dogs and cats are smart in some ways, but they can’t imagine the future very well. But the ability to image the future is not evenly distributed among people. Some people do it very well, some do it quite badly. I teach ancient history; part of being an historian is thinking about long time scales. I regularly think about four thousand years into the past, and I teach my students to do that as well. Then I say to them, okay, if you can think four thousand years into the past, can you think four thousand years into the future? I draw a time line on the blackboard, from 2000 BC to 6000 AD; we fill in some of the important dates in the past, and then we try to imagine (without dates, of course) some of the events of the future. In the past four thousand years we’ve had several “dark ages”; will we have more dark ages in the next four thousand years? What will be the dominant religion four thousand years from now? And, sadly, will there be a human civilization at all?
When I was a kid, the Cold War fear was nuclear warfare would end our world at any moment. Now it’s, “We have only 12 years left”. Check back in 15 years to see if these doomsday placard carriers have wasted the first 12.
A Conservative’s worst nightmare…the educated young person. They depend on ignorance to stay in power which is why they are sabotaging the curriculum’s in Red states. Depending on uneducated people to follow them sounds very much like the Taliban and other radical fundamentalists and cults.
No, Mr. Lester, children like Greta Thunberg today are far more intelligent and aware than you are. Your intent of belittling them for your own self-aggrandizement doesn’t alter that fact.
We teach our children about many things: Respecting elders, treating others with respect, loving Jesus, keeping the sabbath holy, respecting the flag, etc. But caring for our planet is where Lester draws the line.
As usual the cartoon flies over the heads of the tolerant left like a Gilfstream headed for Davo climate conference.
Greta Thunberg and others like her are too young to have learned what she pretends to know. It’s literally impossible for a twelve year old to be a source of data, stats, policy demands and have read " reports from the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change" . It’s not however for the people who seek exploit her based on her innocence and age. That’s called child trafficking and it’s despicable. Debate w/ adults and leave kids out of it because it’s prevalent on the left. Don’t believe me? If you think these kids know wtf there rapping about you’ve never been around a child and it’s probably best you stay away from them:
Mike, I think you meant “Gulfstream” and “Davos”. Further down, I’m certain you meant “they’re”. I’m sure you were writing in haste…
As for smart kids knowing what’s going on… When you’re 12, you’re not yet corrupted by ego, money, power, sex or drugs, so you have a pretty clear insight into what’s going on around you. “Through a child’s eyes” doesn’t always imply innocence. They can see more than you know. My nine year old grandson never ceases to amaze me. For his science project, he portrayed Steven Hawking, complete with wheelchair from which he answered questions for visitors to his display. Kid’s gonna go places.
I’m Sure Trump knows all of the facts. He has studied the Climate Data, the population trends and the subjects like the electrification of the Indian subcontinent and how that will effect global rainfall rates.
By the Way remember when Trump was declared competent by his Pill popping Doctor because he could recognize a Camel, a Lion and a Rino?
Put a copy of this cartoon (and other denier cartoons like them) along with these comments into a time capsule to be opened about 100 years from now. Add a few pertinent “National Geographic” magazines, too. It might assure people in the future that not all of us were to blame for the Earth’s misery, stop them from spitting on all our gravestones.
She is actually 16, but hey, who needs facts. If you are quoting social media as a source of anything (except Russian interference) , get some some critical thinking skills. I know those are considered “elitist” in this republican political climate.
Many of us commenting on these cartoons would be amazed at just how sharp many of our youth are at this point. If allowed space to mature and think for themselves, their contributions to our society could be amazing.
Having worked with hundreds of middle and high school students for over a decade, I know that they are a lot more capable than Mr. Lester believes. Clearly, he is unfamiliar with how knowledge works. We learn what we know from teachers and from texts. These kids can listen, read, and understand cause and effect just fine. It’s not rocket science. Have adults influenced their decision-making, I certainly hope so. Have they been fed lines, possibly; but to believe that teenagers are mere mouthpieces for their parents is a bit ridiculous. They definitely have minds and opinions all their own.
Greta Thunberg rejects environmental prize, saying: ‘The climate doesn’t need awards’>/b>
The award was worth about $52000. She turned it down, saying action based on science to restrain the temperature rise to 2 degrees C or less was important, not giving and getting awards.
Mikey will never face it of course, but he lost this one bigly! The dialogue that is. Maybe he ought to stick to “Mike du Jour” and stay away from “politics.” Why the future of the biosphere is a political football is incomprehensible to me.
