Doesn’t your son get a say, John? Don’t just automatically decide for him!

I don’t think it would be legal for a kid his age to handle food for sale. Maybe in Canada?

Mornings, noon and evenings. How many hours total per day? Does he get any breaks like to use the washroom? If he’s by himself what’s to stop some jerk or jerks from beating him up and taking all the cash? Otherwise it sounds like a great way to earn some money to pay for the window and have a bit of spending money for himself.

There is something screwy about Walt. The only reason to pay in cash is to avoid paying taxes. Is John sure he wants Mike to work for this guy? Plus Walt’s employees get switched around from morning to noon to night just because it will supposedly motivate them? I think most employees prefer to be able to work a regular schedule.

My first paying job netted me $50 the first month. I loved that job, was treated well. My father didn’t like the idea of me earning my own money and made me quit with the excuse that it would bring down my grades. He was a real control freak.

the ‘making change’ part is important for a street vendor…..no computerized cash register to tell how much change to give.

A hot dog empire. And paid in cash, no less. I rather doubt that he sends the Canadian equivalent of a 1099, if there is one.

This is not an ‘opportunity’ it is parental guidance. Get a job or get out. Lessons being taught and learned here.

Paying in cash seems to be a bit tricky. Who is there to verify he actually got paid? IOW, can this employer be trusted?

This hours and cash talk reminded me about my first job. I got paid $1.00 and hour, and had to punch in and out. Our pay came in cash, as well, in those small packets. At least the owner rounded up, not down, the hours. One of my friends said that where she worked, they made up work, or got lost until the top of the hour, just so they would be paid for it whole, since their boss took away minutes and didn’t pay for the whole hour… I kept all the money, and that was the beginning of my college fund.

Good old dad – sent us boys to the neighbor’s farm to work – he was a bachelor so no kids to help on the farm – before sunrise to supper – 6 days a week – we got Sunday off – food/drink plus $5 a week and a ton of experience and life lessons – best job I ever had…

Way to go John! Now Michael will be away from the house part time so less fighting with Lizzie, he will learn responsibility even more, plus when he gets some spending money (after helping pay for a broken window of course) he will see that he can save up for things he wants or take his girlfriend on better/more dates. Win/win.

In 1964, I didn’t have a say when I started working at my German Stepdad’s restaurant in Kansas City at age 15 as the dishwasher (by hand) and the busboy on weekdays from 3 to 7 after high school and 6 to 12 on weekends. Every other Sunday, I would move all the tables and chairs to strip and buff the floor in the main dining room. I had money, but no way to spend it. My senior year I got to have a life, including dating, the HS theater program, and more time for schoolwork. I have mixed feelings about it. Hard work doen’t bother me, but I barely got out of HS.

This will be interesting to say the least. Hopefully there is a bit of training that will follow before leaving Mike alone to handle a shift.
