You thought you were being funny Earl, you knew what she meant even if she misspoke. She may forgive you but Muffin will not. Be prepared for her feline revenge.
We have this at pub trivia every week. A card comes up at the beginning of one game telling players that the game is five questions of three rounds each.
(I liken it to when I describe someone as having “a devoted group of small followers”. You’d be amazed how few people actually notice what I’ve said.)
I work in retail. I sometimes scold my price scanner thing at work to “Do what I mean, not what I say” if I press the wrong buttons by accident. But sometimes the blasted thing likes to do what it wants to do instead of doing what I tell it to do.
She’s angry he did what she told him to do. Also that he didn’t translate from Spouse into English. Also that he didn’t do what she didn’t tell him to do. So therefore it’s all his fault. Been there, done that. And that’s why every time I see a marriage I want to scream, “Run! Run now! It’s still not too late! Don’t do it!” And that’s for both people – this kind of insanity is not part of what being married is all about.
My first wife refused to follow instructions that included any choice points (“If they have garbanzos get them, otherwise get pintos.” was “too complicated”) She also, in perfect seriousness, told me that if I really loved her, she wouldn’t have to tell me what she wanted me to do because I’d just know. My second (and final) wife is a much more reasonable communicator.

She might sound a bit unreasonable in the last panel, but I think I’m gonna have to side with Opal on this one.

What Earl did there, is it called a spoonerism?

By now, Earl should be able to understand “wife-speak”.

Judging by the look on the cat’s face, Earl better sleep with one eye open!

Give him partial credit. IIRC this is the time of year to feed the roses, & cats do need water!
