I don’t think that’s where the earplugs go. That looks more like earrings.

When it comes to Poncho’s ears, who knows? His ear-bones are not well connected to his head-bone.

The easier thing to do is get a can he can’t overturn & open & put all temptations into that one can. Didn’t have problems like that when I was younger & we had dogs, but then we got a cat. I learned fast what I could & couldn’t put on shelves etc. But then again in a comic Poncho could probably open the bear trash cans used in a lot of Florida counties (though so far not where I live).

Look at it this way, Chaz… shouting at him the old way didn’t help either, and this is easier on your voice.

Since Poncho seems capable of detaching his ears at will, I think the ear plugs are unnecessary.

Actually, if you look closely you can see him put the ear plugs in his ears. Look at panel 4 and you can see little plugs in his ears. He never “detached” his ears.
