10 or 11 years ago, I took a temporary job at the first dollar store in this area…. it was opening just in time for Christmas.

It was actually called “Everything’s A Dollar.”

A zillion signs, but people still asked that question all day long. I’m sure they still do, at every dollar store.

The first day, the manager wanted us to yell “price check” and everybody working there would call back in unison, “Everything’s a dollar.”

Cute… but it made the customers feel foolish, so we stopped in a couple of days.

    So this conversation would happen:

Customer … “How much is this?”

    Me… “$1”

Customer… “But the tag says $3.98”

    Me… “It’s $1 now.”

Customer… “But why does it say $3.98?”

    Me…“That’s an old tag.”

    Customer… “But it’s printed right there… doesn’t that mean it’ll ring up at $3.98?”

I can’t tell you how much I wanted to say “Beats me. I guess that’ll be $3.98, please …plus tax.”

But alas, I was just a seasonal employee, and that wasn’t allowed.

A poster over on NotAlwaysRight had an elderly gentleman come in and glance around and then challenge her, insisting that there had to be something in the store than was over $1. He finally came back with a pair of reading glasses, and proudly informed her that they were $2.50. She choked back laughter and told him that was the strength, not the price.

Those two are each other’s only friend, yet they constantly turn on each other.

I’m surprised Agnes can’t find string in the dumpster.

I live in Ontario Canada. At our dollar stores prices range anywhere from about 80 cents to about $5.00. Doesn’t matter if you are in Dollarama, Dollar Tree, or Everything For A Dollar, they all have wide price ranges.

Agnes got $9 from the priest last Sunday. She should be able to spring for the string, unless she spent it all on kites, Cheetos, and Reese’s cups.
