Hey Now. Unlike today’s “cartoons,” Rocky and Bullwinkle were actually FUNNY!

Oh, the good old days. Road Runner, Quick Draw McGraw, Huckleberry Hound, Pink Panther. Sigh.

You really take me back with these! I loved Road Runner, Tom and Jerry, all the Loony Tunes, Pink Panther etc.

Only got to see Beanie and Cecil when we’d be able to spot them on somebody’s tv. Ah, Cecil the seasick sea serpent as voiced by Stan Freberg.

Rocky and Bullwinkle had a lot of humor aimed at adults — jokes that small children wouldn’t understand. My eight grade English teacher watched it on Sunday mornings. The satire was his favorite feature of the show.

I loved Beanie and Cecil so much that I had a Beanie Copter (hat) and a Cecil talking puppet. Cecil’s record got messed up so that when I pulled the string, the only thing he ended up being able to say was, “I’M COMING, BEANIE!”

I never liked cartoons or the 3 Stooges. Instead, I stayed home Saturday mornings and watched Sky King and Roy Rogers. Sometimes a Zorro movie would be shown in the afternoon if I was around.

Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird were both unemployed techs working in the Boston area equivalent of Silicon Valley. One day while watching samurai movies and reading comic books (X-Men in particular) one of them sketched a ninja turtle, the other put down his comic book and said “Make it a Teenaged Mutant Ninja Turtle” Using money from income tax refunds and a loan from one of the guy’s uncles, they put together a one-shot self published comic book to distribute in the area. They had enough to print either 500 or 1,000 of these comics. By the time they got back from the last store that agreed to sell the book, the message machine was full, “You got any more?” And the universe was changed forever.

The really sad thing is that after all these years these series (TMNT e R&B) are rebooted instead of investing in new ideas.

There are still cool cartoons. Miraculous Ladybug, Star vs the forces of Evil just ended. Bob’s burgers. To name just a few.

Does anyone else remember Beanie & Cecil when they were puppets on the local LA station? (Channel 5, KTLA) Personally I liked the puppets much better than the cartoon.
