I have an old (1960’s) folio sized book of Life Magazine’s photos of WWII. One shows a basketball game on the flight deck of an Essex class aircraft carrier and focuses on the morale officer of the ship making a shot. That officer was Gerald Ford. Clinton and Ford were both left-handed and were both adopted and later changed their names, taking the name of their adoptive fathers.
I have the vaguest memories of this event. Just sort of, well they got rid of one crook, and now Jerry can’t do any more damage to Michigan in the House.
I vividly remember the day (less than a year later) when Nixon resigned and good ol’ Jerry became president. I wasn’t watching the news or any like that. It was the (long distance!) phone call from my mother. When I answered the phone, rather then her usual “Hi this is your mother,” the first thing she said was, “Do you know how many years I voted against that bag of hot air?!?” My reply, “Oh, so Nixon resigned?” Mom went on to describe how she had voted against Jerry Ford every two years since she was old enough to vote (except that one election year when we lived in Kentucky). She was so disgusted with the whole thing.
Dewsolo brings up an interesting point: Being president must do something to the people who hold that title. (Not holding my breath on the current resident, however) Ever notice how, once they become former presidents, they are such wonderful people?
41 befriended the people who beat him – from 40 to 42. And 43 is apparently a fairly close friend to 44 ’s wife, Michelle.
Oh, heck, while I’m at it, an honorable mention to John McCain (who wanted to be 44): For all the bad things that he did, I still want to remember him for defending the future 44 to a heckling protestor!
For what it’s worth, some people here might like what Darrin Bell is doing over at Comics Kingdom. In general, I do, too. Nevertheless, his send offs for both 41 and John McCain – well, I won’t spoil it here. I just want to see what other people think.
None of these people were perfect. Not even 44. But if they were all as bad as Bell suggests, one might wonder, why do we vote at all?
@Cheapskate0…I think the truth isn’t pretty, but must not be swept under the rug. Bell is giving voice to the events and decisions of Bush Senior’s term, which might otherwise be silenced by blind praise. Power enables those who do good and/or ill to do such things in grander scale. This comic, for instance, is a brilliant illustration of the complexity of the office and the person holding the office.
Besides, do you want to be inundated by only flattering tributes when the current pee-resident shuffles off his bloated mortal coil?
Because I’m (mumble mumble) decades old, I remember the odd couple of Nixon and Ford at LEAST as much as Oscar and Felix. The (temporary) even odder couple of Trump and Pence? Well, Pence DOES gaze at Trump with that Nancy Reagan braindead look of adoration she used to give to Ronnie. Yet I’m pretty sure Pence is measuring for new drapes and furniture………

Technically, wasn’t George Washington the first Un-elected President? At least the first one not elected by the people, but by Congress?

If Andrew Johnson was successfully impeached, the President of the Senate Pro Temp Ben Wade would have been President, thereby getting that milestone.

Republicans NEVER allow naval ships to be named after Democrats.
Because patriotism.

Wrong! There are 2 aircraft carriers named after democratic presidents: JFK and FDR.

It just occurs to me … I don’t recall ever seeing Lyndon Johnson in any of Brian’s cartoons.

I don’t get why Ford was accountable to no one; he did have checks and balances, and he did stand for election when his term was up.

There is no “was” an Eagle Scout, only “is” an Eagle Scout. Nevertheless, I would need to ask if that ends after an Eagle Scout passes away.

GoComics upload hasn’t been working properly for some reason, so hopefully that gets fixed at some point during the night.
Meantime, it’s up over at www.twopartyopera.com
