To qualify as an out, the ball must be caught in the player’s hand or in the glove. Catching any other way does not result in an out, and in some cases (such as deliberately catching the ball in the cap) may result in an extra base being awarded. This event was obviously unintentional, and presumably the ball could be easily retrieved by the fielder, so the ball would still be in play.
