Kim Jong Un is 36. Trump turns 72 tomorrow (June 14). Trump literally got played by a brutal dictator half his age and twice as smart.
Kim Jong Un got everything — his long-desired photo op and a pledge for the United States to stab long-time allies Japan and South Korea in the back with his pledge to scale back U.S. military presence, and Trump got vague, non-specific, non-verifiable generalities.
If Trump could have gotten a deal with North Korea that was anywhere near half as good as what Obama got with Iran (along with England, Germany, France, China and Russia — a broad international coalition) we would never hear the end of his bragging.
As it is, Trump failed miserably at the “Art of the Deal” (which was actually ghost-written by Tony Schwartz, who has provided much insight into Trump’s utter incoherence and incompetence) and we’re still going to get the bragging.
Conservatives used to talk about Neville Chamberlain a lot, as an example of what happens when you cozy up to dictators. Peace in our time. Okay, now we’ve got denuclearization in our time. Is it going to work any better?
Trump: “Denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula … some time”
Before going to Munich, Chamberlain asked his military if they could win a war with Germany. The answer was in essence: “Not this year. We need at least a year to get ready.” And they did need that time to build up military strength; most importantly to build the new fighter planes and to work out how to use their new radar, the things that won the Battle of Britain. Chamberlain was not the gullible fool people make of him. He bought time for Britain.
Unlike Britain in 1938, the US has the military upper hand over an impoverished North Korea. The North Koreans know that using a nuclear weapon against the US will lead to a crushing response that leave none of their leadership in command of anything but a prison cell, if they manage to survive.
But for Trump to claim that things were settled, is simply the usual self-promotion, of no more reality than the claims to having the largest inaugural crowds ever. The difference, however, between all that self-serving BS and this is that it unsettles allies, and enables murderous despots for no reason except self gratification.
Chamberlain’s agreement may be seen as encouraging the murderous despots of that day, but he had to hold off a war that he would lose. Not the same stakes for Trump. Not at all.

C’mon, Scott.
All Republicans are required to trust Trump absolutely.
Just watch a little Fox “news” and they’ll tell you how the stable genius has totally, totally outsmarted Kim.
You know, totally.

I notice that conservatives are really big on making sure nothing they say can be reported or verified. This is very important to them.
I guess that leaves only trust.
