Elizabeth started it, El, and John just followed along. You can’t mad over quality parent/child bonding.

Yeah, what’s wrong with a father and daughter playing together, even if they both need baths by the end of the day?

Elly needs to loosen up a bit.

Instead of being shocked at Elizabeth and John’s condition after they have already walked in the house, Elly is waiting at the door for them, glowering and ready to lower the boom. There’s no playing with children outside, unless you can do it without getting dirty.

Oh Elly, you worry too much about dirt. Worry about keeping a tidy and clean house. Let the children be children – they don’t stay that way forever, ya know. You will have your clean and tidy house when all the kids are gone. Well, expect the occasional mess when grandkids come to visit!

What a stick in the mud! A good mother would have joined in.

John should just offer to wash his and Elizabeth’s dirty clothes and wash the floor. If that doesn’t work she really does have issues!

She’s mad because they got dirty when she should be happy that they’re getting along.

I have the feeling Elly would do a lot of things differently if she could go back and do them again. In the moment, though, what she sees is all she sees. How do I know this? Because I would do a lot of things differently if I could go back.

I do laundry, big freaking deal. Put in clothes, detergent and wait till washed. Then put in dryer and wait till dry. OH my, the humanities!

If I were Elly, I would have done one of 2 things: 1) go out & join them in the fun; or 2) leave them be to have some bonding time. I would NOT have done 3) get ticked off over a bit of dirt. Believe me, I wish we had a yard so that my husband & girls COULD do something like this.

What a horrible reaction. I would have taken a picture (even in the original strip’s film days) to record a magical moment between father and daughter.

I’m not normally and Elly basher, but what a killjoy!

Actually, when I play with the grandkids like that, my wife has a look of endearment on her face…and then she tells us to clean up the mess.

So many comments on this strip every day seem to be criticism of Elly. It’s a comic strip for Pete’s sake. If you don’t like her,read something else.

My DH was never like this with our kids. It just wasn’t in him to play with them…or even touch them, for that matter. It was the way he grew up. He just couldn’t bring himself do it. I learned to accept it. I parented them by myself, even though their dad was right there.

He who isn’t like a child …

The joke here is how daddy looks just like a guilty kid! Adorable.

Are the characters gonna start aging again?

She’s just upset that she missed out on all the fun!

My best friend growing up was afraid to come home dirty. My mom would give us an appraising, appreciative look and pronounce, You must have had FUN getting THAT dirty! and we were good.
