Val: Phil? Can you come for a Stone family dinner?
Phil: Sure! Is it movie night?
Val: No...meet-Holly's-boyfriend night.
Phil: *
Phil: So I should come in uniform?
Val: With sirens blaring!!
10 WEST
So, Jordan is meeting Holly’s family. I think this story could go on to Holly meeting Jordan’s family. And if I’ve learned anything from Meet the Parents and Meet the Fockers, every family is neurotic in its own ways.
Okay, I understand this is a cartoon, and I see the humour, but in Real Life(TM), wearing his uniform to supper (unless he’s on duty, and on his supper break) would be Not Right. It tells people that police are to be feared, and that’s not what they want. At least, not here in Canada. Besides, if he’s an average uniformed officer, the muscle, haircut, and general attitude will give him awat as fast as the uniform.
As for Phil using a cell phone: Phil could be sitting on a STOPPED motorcycle. I shall assume so, since it’s a personal call. I have seen our police here in Darkest Saskatchewan still using their cell phones after handheld cells were banned. Of course, you can still use a hand-free phone in your vehicle, and the accident statistics for hands-free and hand-held cells are identical. But that never stopped a politician.
Before they were banned, I saw one idiot screaming into a cell phone that was tucked below his helmet; screaming because his motorcycle had no muffler. Now THAT was amusing, and I still wonder, several years later, what the party on the other end of the conversation was thinking while they had to listen to the motorcycle.
I’ve always thought it odd that this strip is set in Eugene, Oregon because it rarely snows there, at least not in the way it’s shown when it’s Winter time in the strip. I went to college in Eugene (GO DUCKS) and I can only remember one year when it heavily snowed and that melted away pretty quickly. The weather is not done correctly for the setting if it is Eugene.
I now live in Texas and I-10 West covers a large area here so putting that in the strip makes me think she’s trying to set the strip in the southwest/Texas area.
Whatever the case and whatever the setting is supposed to be, it’s a great strip and I’ve enjoyed reading it for many years so thanks Jan!
If I-10 cuts thru where they are they can be in neither Iowa or Oregon. I-10 begins in Jacksonville, FL and ends in Los Angeles, CA. Truly trans-continental across the southern US.
Interstate 10 may not go through Oregon, but Oregon Highway 10 (also called the TV Highway is a really congested commuter road in and out of Portland. It’s a ways from Eugene, but it would be a happy hunting ground for a motorcycle cop.
(Update: I’ve been away from Portland too long. TV Highway is 8, not 10.)
LordOfTheExacto… I live just off TV Highway in Hillsboro, and you’re right: it IS Highway 8. I believe that the Beaverton - Hillsdale Highway is 10 though.

Stone Soup is set in Iowa, according to the strip itself, sometime or the other in the past.

So, if he is talking on his cell phone while riding his motorcycle, does that mean it is okay to do so when driving?

It’s ok that Phil is on his cell phone. He’s obviously stopped, look at the traffic in the background - it’s not moving.

Hey it’s a cartoon. Don’t try to rationalize it, just enjoy it and laugh. You do know how to laugh don’t you?

Let’s not forget that I-10 passes through Las Cruces, New Mexico. Our motorcycle cops look a lot like Phil.
