The imaginary deep state sounds almost as scary as “government of the people, by the people, and for the people” to the minority fringe that wormed their way into office and wonders why their approval rating is so low.
What’s really scary about this? It ISN’T an exaggeration in FAR too many Republican Households in America. They really DO believe in that crap spewed by “people” like Insane Alex Jones, Rusty Lamebrains, Lumpy Hannity, Matt Sludge, and other crackpot nutcases!
Cambridge Analytica tested words and phrases that cause fear, when you are using propaganda, words matter, especially those that cause fear and doubt. “Deep state” was tested, so was “Build the Wall” and “Drain The Swamp.” The propaganda still goes on….. time to wake up from this nightmare.
Off course evil greedy racist Trump the destroyer of American government says the deep state is any honest person in the government that opposes him and his Russian influenced agenda.
BTW jlocke, the Hatch act strictly regulates civil service employees with respect to participation in partisan activities, you know. That even includes driving people to the polls unless they’re relatives.
Fox “News” and Rush Limbaugh were set up by Roger Ailes to do propaganda since the repeal of the “Fairness Doctrine,” in ‘87, which he had a role in repealing. It was set up in 1949, after WW2 had shown that unchecked propaganda can lead to an ill informed public, it merely stated that if you put out controversial material as fact, you must allow the same for opposing viewpoints. Why does Rush earn $50 million a year? Keeping the GOP base as uninformed and fearful of the truth, science and international affairs as possible, is very lucrative. If Clear Channel had to allow opposing views right after Rush made some controversial statement, well that would be that. Everyone at Fox knows what they are feeding their viewers is crap, but the money is so, so good. Only now when a few reborn “patriots” see the danger in what they’ve created, i.e. Trump, are they jumping ship.
Or maybe the “entrenched bureaucracy of the deep state” really is more deadly than the entrenched belief that private citizens have a God given right to own weapons that can obliterate the internal organs of a dozen people per second.
Nope. It’s not the “Deep State” that’s going to leave your child dead in a pool of their own blood.
@"jlocke"…every large organization is dysfunctional to some degree. Government, corporations, churches, charities, universities and other types of entities are plagued with the same problem. Your antipathy for the federal government is obvious. What’s not so obvious would be your specific policy proposals to support your call to re-regulate the civil service.
It’s easy to throw out nonsense terms to stir up human anxiety. That’s trump’s game, and apparently yours. It’s harder to make a real proposal that can be negotiated and implemented.
So “John” why don’t you start with your policy proscriptions for the War Department? It’s the biggest bureaucracy around. Or explain the elegantly and carefully planned rationale behind gutting the State Department of its top and mid-level diplomats. You like for the executive branch to be poorly informed, I guess. Or what about the NIH? Those nasty clinicians and researchers. Or the EPA scientists. What’s your proposal there? We know you think public housing is wrong, so what are you proposing for HUD?
Talk is cheap. ALL organizations have bureaucracies that are, to one degree or another dysfunctional. Simplistic “solutions” are just that. I know, I know, in your version of the way the world works, the profit motive is what “guarantees” that profit making entities will avoid inefficiency and bureaucratic nonsense. That’s just dumb.
The fundamental error you make “John” is you don’t appreciate that the purpose of our government is different from the purpose of a corporation. Your whole schtick on “individual freedom” is sadly out of time and place. We are more interdependent than ever, and only government can attempt to serve everyone within that interdependent state. You seem to ascribe consistently negative traits to federal employees, which is just Wrong. For the most part these are people who want to do the right thing and are sincere in their work. It’s easier to cry “deep state” when you ignore reality.

There is no such thing as an honest Republican, that is a make-believe concept designed to give you a false sense of security and contentment.
