Mr. Gray is indeed a fix-it guy. Mrs. Berger might see the be concerned about how their two wards might be impacted by their marriage? He can fix that!
Irma? I know time passes very S-L-O-W-L-Y within the VAST Luanniverse, but Al asked to be Your Husband back on December 23rd. And Now He has to ask You a again on February 2nd? What do You think He’s doing? KIDDING??
It’s Real Simple Irma, Either “Yes” or “No.” And Please say “Yes,” because if You say “No” everybody will blame Your Son Gunther, and I’m getting a bit tired of “defending” Him.
You know what? Nevermind. I’ll answer for You: SHE SAID YES AL. GO BOOK THE HONEYMOON SUITE WHILE I TELL GUNTHER THE GOOD NEWS AFTER HE COMES TO!
To whoever said this yesterday, I agree. Mrs. Berger DOES look like Gunther in drag. I don’t think she was drawn as quite such a mirror image of her son in the older strips.
I could be wrong about that, but now, I mean, take away the necklace and earrings and it’s Gunther!
Irma doesn’t look very happy about all this. What if she doesn’t want Gunther out of the house? Mr. Gray seems to be the sort of guy who’s used to getting his way. And does he know his sister is using the Fuse to sell bootleg lingerie?
What’s the deal with Mr. Grey’s eyes? is it supposed to make him look sinister and devious? If that’s the case then mission accomplished. Or is he blind like Daredevil and all his other senses are so heightened you don’t realize he’s blind?
So the plan is to move the two adult sons that do not care for each other at all into a shared home so the parents can be alone together for there marriage? Are they really that clueless?
OK, Don Al has (however imperfectly) proposed to Mrs. Berger. Meanwhile, his sister, Ann Eiffel (AKA, Lady Lingerie ) is currently dating Tiffany’s never-seen dad. So we have a situation where we will have these unpleasant matrimonial connections to a number of main characters whose lives look like they’re headed for something better. This is the apocalypse, right?
In keeping with the ‘Mafia/Mob’ vibe in regard to Al Gray, today I can hear him speaking like Don (Vito) Corleone as he says: “Beloved Irma, this move and commitment will help keep the family – OUR family – together, as it should be! Dat is, IF you know what I mean! Heh-heh-heh.”
Always with the Poker Face, eh Mr. Grey? He’s playing the long game and I might have a clue as to what the endgame is. I think he really just wants to bring happiness to the ones he loves, but in a quiet, measured way. I need a drink now.
“The Boys” should be living on their own. “Gunthie” in a just-so corner apartment in The Castro which a collection of original Broadway cast recordings on vinyl; Les as a more or less permanent guest of the state correctional system.
I think Irma may wind up having second thoughts about Mr. Gray, who, as someone else commented, is used to getting what he wants. Personally, I’d like to see Tiffany’s father, once he finds out the truth about his scamming girlfriend, be charmed by Irma’s down home, wholesome values and start dating her. (Cue the theme from the Brady Bunch.)
I still see Les as a much misunderstood artisan type. He and Gunther might find they have some common interests and bond over shared opposition to the marriage of important people in their lives. I wonder what might develop if Les were to enroll in the community college and meet up with Luann’s art instructor. Or he might show some talent in engineering design of some sort. With the possible romantic liaisons developing, anything could happen. Irma and Al, Mr. Farrell and Ann, Tiffany and somebody, anybody — doesn’t;t have to be Les or Gunther.
I guess I’m old school, but after high school, you WENT AWAY to college and after graduation, well time to get a job and GET YOUR OWN PLACE. Or you could enlist and let Uncle Sam take care of your housing needs. . But hanging out at the parents, no how no way. Mr. Grey’s plan is going to cripple those boys as if Gunther’s mom hasn’t already warped Gunther enough already.
But I’m fine with the marriage; in fact, about time.
He felt her out… If she wasn’t in the thought space about getting married, she would have balked at the “Leslie and Gunther” reference. “Why would Leslie and Gunther ever live together?” would’ve been the first thought, then “Construction?”
@MAYFLOWER: We have never seen any evidence of artistic ability from Les. He may be misunderstood, or may have had a rough time of life with a criminal for one parent and the other missing. But that doesn’t automatically lead to artistic talent. So far, his previous talent has been his ability to acquire funds that are not his. But since starting work at The Fuse and being praised by Nancy, he may be starting to change his attitude. A good first step, but still no guarantee of artistic, musical, acting or other such ability.
The question, which I hope the next panels make clearer, is that Al has already proposed to Irma, which the “boys” accidentally overheard, which would mean she has already agreed to marriage. What he is doing is protecting her son, and his nephew, with both of those “boys” bozos being near some kind of parental influence. Once a parent, or one who takes over parental responsibilities (as Al has done, and Ann is incapable of doing) always a parent. I know that from sad, but necessary experience.
Mr. Al Gray, Man of Mystery, is also laconic. Few words; just action. Let’s do it, Irma Berger! The Pitts townhall Justice of the Peace office is open until 5:00 P.M.
I like Mr. Gray’s style, he knows what he wants and he goes for it. The problem that may get in the way of his romance is his sister being outed as a fraud and thief. If Gunther decided to throw a monkey wrench in the works he could try and convince his mother Gray was working with Ann Eiffel.

Marriage means getting the boys out of the house. And there can be only one reason he wants that to happen. He likes those boys as much as I do.

Funny how Irma did not say ‘Marriage?’ first? That is quite telling. Al should make a notation of that and not to push too hard.
