Robbie the Robot from the sci-fi movie Forbidden Planet (1956) and Robot B9 from the TV series Lost in Space (1965-1968) are far more advanced than him! This one Sluggo made looks like The Tin Woodsman from The Wizard of Oz (1939)

    1-NANCY: I haven’t seen Sluggo in days…

    2-…I’d best check in.

3-SLUGGO: I invented a parent to order me around. Now I’ll enjoy it more when I don’t do any of those things.

For those wondering why we skipped from a strip appearing on 12/31/49 to 1/2/50, January 1, 1950 was a Sunday.

You’re going to get tennis elbow if you add any more wind up tasks to his “programming”

You’re overthinking it, Sluggo. Cardboard box, magic marker, and off you go.

For those of you old enough to remember, the 1950’s/’60’s were the times when robots were mainly appearing on the scene…. toys, movies, name it. So, this strip is not a recurrence of the “robot club” from the “new” Nancy, but rather, a reminder of how kids in that era thought, and what excited them. I, myself, had a toy robot that walked, spun from its center, and the chest opened up, and twin machine guns would “shoot,” then retract. That, was cool stuff!
