Cue the manic ammosexuals cry that it’s just people with mental illness that’re the problem, not the guns.

Repeating something does not make it so.

So why are the worst gun crime statistics in the states with the strictest gun laws? Inconvenient truth. . .

I saw a guy in a cowboy hat and boots with a big ol’ pistol prominently displayed in a belt holster in the frozen foods section of the grocery store just a few days ago. I don’t know what scenario he thought that gun was going to be at all useful, but I couldn’t stop myself from rolling my eyes every time I caught glimpse him.

I have conflicting thoughts on the issue. On the one hand we have the Constitution and as long as we don’t repeal the Second Amendment, people have the right to be armed. I agree with the concept that a government that does not respect its citizens should have a reason to fear them.

    .

I cannot find the data, but it certainly seems that most mass shootings are done by people with some sort of mental illness. People with causes usually choose explosives.

    .

So background checks are a good idea, but where do we stop? Have you ever been convicted of a felony? Have you ever been hospitalized for a mental condition? Have you ever been diagnosed with depression? Have you ever been arrested for drug abuse? What prescription drugs are you taking or have taken in the past year? Provide the results of your last physical examination. Have you ever been recommended for an anger management program? Have you ever filed for or are you currently filing for bankruptcy? Show us your last 3 tax returns and all current bank statements. Have you ever traveled outside the United States? Have you ever had contact with a foreign national? List your last three employers. Give us the name of all your relatives. List all professional, social, fraternal, political and religious organizations of which you have ever been a member. What is your political affiliation? Are you divorced? How many times a day do you use a restroom? Do you use the restroom that matches the gender on your birth certificate?

    .

How much privacy should a person give up to exercise his right under the Second Amendment? Why don’t we have similar restrictions on other Constitutional rights?

Before deep polarization, when people respected each other’s beliefs, there existed the possibilities of deliberation and reconciliation to make sensible regulations that everyone could live with … now, I’m right and your’e wrong, bipolar justice doesn’t seem to work as well.

Shame we can’t compromise with the “others” any longer.

I have guns in a safe, venison in the freezer, and coyotes in my “back yard”, which is National Forest. I have a concealed carry permit, and the requirements to obtain it should be standard for anyone to own ANY firearm. Background check every four years, proof of competency on a range, and proof of understanding ethics and laws regarding use of deadly force. People kill people, they just do it a lot easier with guns, and they do it a lot in the US.
