Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for March 07, 2017

Now we know from where Calvin gets it.

Change the title to “Mom and Hobbes and Raccoon.”

Some people have theorized that Hobbes used to belong to mom.

Mom is wise, giving her child something he can do to “help” even though the poor critter is beyond help. We all need to feel we’ve done all we can.

Notice how Hobbes seems to be pointing the way to the Raccoon in the first panel. Coincidence, I think not.

Is it the first time Mom’s talking to Hobbes? Or am I feeling an aura of secrecy reveal?

I won’t be able to re-read this series. I have the book that it is published in and it always make me teary eyed.

Don’t we all talk to someone…not really not there, but comforting.

No cartoonist drew emotion better than Watterson

I recently learned that male raccoons will kill baby raccoons to try and bring the mother back into season. Had a neighbor try to save a baby raccoon from a large male that was attacking it, but the poor guy was too badly injured. We have a wildlife rehab right up the road, though, which comes in very handy.

Compassion, thy name is MOTHER.

I’ve always thought that Watterson had a lot of affection for Calvin’s mom.

Watch for rabies.

I know. I peaked back in the archives yesterday and read the whole thing. It’s pretty sad.

In our area, they used to have coon hunts and give out prizes for those bringing in the most in a single night, and for who brought in the heaviest. (Contest usually centered at a local tavern) Fortunately, I don’t see them advertised anymore. As in any competition, someone looks for shortcuts. They finally caught on that some men were catching baby ’coons early in the year, put them in a cage and force feed them in order to bring in the heaviest in the fall.

Hobbes is a good listener.

I do the same. I cuddle my toy mouse when the going gets tough.
