Amazing, the words in Wilde Bill’s post: “watch” and “work”, when I click on them I get a pop up ad! And an ad for Steak and Shake in Dennis’s word “click”.How did I get so lucky?

Rose…don’t get excited… but that’s not something on GoComics.

It’s on your computer….some sort of “adware” or “malware” that needs to be removed.

What browser do you use?And do you run antivirus software?

Sometimes it’s just something that downloaded itself to your browser and can easily be removed.

Rose, if you are use Firefox, check your Add-ons under the Tool menu. Awhile back I had the same problem. Turned out to be a plugin called something like Content Loader (I think).Just look for any odd sounding plugins.

Thanks guys, A minute ago I had a worse problem. A blue screen with a notice that there was a malfunction on my hard drive and to call the Techs to fix it. I wasn’t born yesterday so I went into Norton who said I was all ok and protected.It was a scam and whoever it was wanted to take over my computer to “fix” it.I shut down and re-booted and it was gone.I’ll now go into Tools and look for the rogue pop-up ad plugin.<space.Sometimes these things are attached to an image in Google Images. It’s scary.

I had that computer scam come up. It looks so real. We googled the phone number and there was lots there about the scam.

susanI went back and looked at your post to me yesterday, and no it isn’t a link to a video. I know how to do those, Bev taught me. It is an adware link, I picked up that somewhere, I’m all over the net so who knows where I got it. I’m well protected tho. our neighbor who set up my system knows where I go on the computer so I have enough protection to stave off zombies! He apparently didn’t think about adware.I did get a notice the Norton killed a malware the other day.

Rose, I didn’t say a word about a video.I said a link to an image hosting site…something you may never have used, as your images come straight off the web.

I have never had malware show up in the many images I have downloaded and/or posted from Google search in over 15 years… I suppose it could happen, but it’s rare…your antivirus/anti-malware software should stop anything like that as it’s downloading.(You do need the latter; it protects against adware and spyware that isn’t actually a virus.)

The most common way to get what you have on your PC is from an unsafe link in someone else’s (hacked, usually) e-mail.Not saying that’s how it happened this time.

We can talk about it later or by e-mail or phone…Gotta get my car to the mechanic right now.

Annette, I am sure you are unaware, but your posting method comes with sleazy advertising. In the case of the “This World” thumbnail I could never see the original, only the ads. So there is some virtue in doing it by the book. Which is really not hard.

As I said in the message I left you Friday….I’ve had other problems with PostImage as well, including that some people see X-rated images on the upload page, and also, that the cake I had uploaded there and posted on No. Six’s birthday was apparently invisible to anybody east of the Rockies.

Roger. you need to bend your knees really deep, get your weight waay forward, and accelerate gently. It might work. Film at 11.

LROS, if you can’t eliminate the malware with scans, you may be able to reset your computer to a time before you had issues. How you do this varies with operating system. But I have in the past had luck with this versus those screens that invade and rapidly eliminate all your defenses, such as task manager. Open in safe mode, if you have that, and reset to a couple of weeks ago.

Dennis, Rose… and anybody else with this problem…Please….. Shutting down the computer on a running malware program, or using Task Manager to end it, only stops it temporarily.In fact, if your antivirus software isn’t doing a good job, or you didn’t keep up with the latest “definitions”, and ever get a nasty boot virus, instead of just adware, those actions could allow it to do even more harm when you next reboot.Using system restore to “roll back” to a “good configuration” might buy you a little time, but it will NOT uninstall a virus or most other malware!Occasionally you could be lucky…but most often it will remain in your system…. lurking.

Install anti-spyware software if your antivirus program doesn’t contain it, update both to the latest definitions, and thoroughly scan your computer with everything you’ve got.If it doesn’t go away and you can’t manage to do any more…. take your computer to a professional to be cleaned.

DO NOT, meanwhile, trust or click on any pop up windows or banners, or programs suddenly appearing that you didn’t know you had…they may well be part of the malware.
