You still need to know how much change you get when you purchase something. And I’ve noticed a lot of kids at cash registers today depend on the cash register to tell them how much money to give the customer. Once the register quit working and the kid couldn’t figure out that the change from a $10 bill for a $5.58 purchase was $4.42. Pitiful.

No one understands Common Core. A quiz said what is 5×3 and he/she wrote 5+5+5 = 15 and was dunned a point because the teacher said it was 3+3+3+3+3. How could they be a math teacher and not know THE ASSOCIATIVE LAW! I’m horrible at math and I know that! 5×3 is the same as 3×5!

And then count it back to the customer. That’s is what the manager should be teaching the new hires.

I like the puzzled look on the cashier’s face when the bill is $9.77 and I give them a $20 bill and two pennies. They don’t know what to do with the two pennies.

My foreign students have been my best for a long time and the US students seemed worse each year, but now, over last 5 years, I’m seeing improvement. The biggest issue was problem solving and critical thinking.
