I can identify with this, although I didn’t get all emo about it.I just found out that no store in my town carries Vitalis any more. I use Vitalis, but a 7 oz bottle lasts me a year. I bought 3 bottles through Amazon. We’ll see how things are 3 years from now.(For those who have never heard of Vitalis, it’s an old-fashioned man’s hair tonic. It’s not oily, but it acts as a conditioner. A few drops every time after I shampoo do the trick for me. Presto! No fly-away hair.)

Rust Restorer? Excellent example of cheap alternative, virtually free from any water faucet. Apply frequently to keep object damp. Rust will be restored within a few days. .Oh. What? Rust Reformer? .Never mind. .(And you can buy it – the Reformer one, the liquid – on Amazon. )

I’m semi-retired now and my nest egg was bolstered significantly by “frugal” past purchases of shaving cream, shampoo and other stuff.

PLUS – all my non-purchases of bottled water and “fivebux” coffee.

I bought a book years ago that has saved me massive amounts of money on cosmetics and skin care. The expensive stuff is packaging, marketing, and hype, not to mention snob appeal. There are the same ingredients in everything!

So – I remove make up with baby lotion, then a warm washcloth, use baby lotion for moisturizer (face and body), witch hazel for toner, vegetable shortening with beeswax, vitamin e oil, and koolaid for lip balm, castor oil (a wee dab) for age spots (works really well).Concealer, a cheap eye shadow box and mascara. A makeup expert told me to use Maybelline – it is high quality and low price. Get brown/taupe shades and use it to shadow, do eyebrows, and eyeliner. The lip balm also works as blusher if necessary and a quick dab of baby powder on the nose and that is it.Frugal, smells good, looks great. People always guess my age at 10 to 15 years younger.

My husband uses whatever is cheapest. No makeup though!

My shaving supplies come by mail. Much cheaper, and a better shave, to boot.

Late yesterday I remembered my saddest Discontinued Thing. Several years ago I was in hog heaven after noticing that I was wearing a short-sleeved tee shirt that perfectly fit my somewhat shrunken frame. I have a thin waste and other features that would be TMI to describe. Tall-wise, I’ve kind of shrunk from 5’ 5" to around 5’ 2.5" or so. I thought it would be nice to get more of these items, so in a burst of brilliance looked on the inside label (which is just printing inside the back). It was a Cherokee SS Ultimate Tee, size 16XL. “16XL?!” I thought. I’ve never worn anything that large. Then I realized I was wearing my 11- or 12-year-old granddaughter’s tees. (She’s a tad on the large size.) The shirts were readily available at Target, and I stocked up. Fast-forward a couple of years, and I discovered that Cherokee had stopped making this style. The things I could find were flimsy and had weird patterns. Woe.After just looking online, however, I see that Cherokee is now making something that looks similar, the girls’ C9 Champion Duo Dry Tech (or Endurance) T-Shirt. Wish me luck.

My husband, “old frugal fart,” is chuckling heartily at this.

My sisters and I have been mourning since we were teenagers when they stopped making a lipstick called “Gypsy Roseleaf.” It was the perfect shade between brown and dusty rose. We look to find its equal to this day! I feel your pain Janis!!
