In today’s Calvin and Hobbes, notice that in the first panel, Calvin is on the left side of the tree. In the second panel he has switched to the right side (when viewed from where Mom is standing). And in the third panel he is back on the left side.Bill Watterson drew it this way deliberately, because he wanted to keep Mom on the left side of the panel for the entire strip. But if he had drawn Calvin on the right side of the tree in panel 2, we wouldn’t have been able to see him, because he would have been blocked by the tree. Or, if he wasn’t blocked by the tree, Calvin’s back would have been to us in Panel 2 and the tree would have been between Mom and Calvin.
I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt – she checked that Calvin wasn’t in or under the car first, or anybody else for that matter, before being sure that Calvin was “missing” and she had to go look for him.
I question Mom’s priorities— first she calls the tow truck & waits for them to pull out the car. Only then does she look for her missing son and BTF (best tiger forever)
There is nothing about climate that applies to the event. Even if it was a misspelled “climactic”, that word doesn’t apply here either! Perhaps you meant something akin to dramatic?

@Laynegg: Maybe you’re right. But it must be really difficult for the camera person to keep them in the frame. Calvin is just so……… so animated.

I like Hobbs’ balancing act. Might have something to do with his tail getting shorter then longer.

Some might think this was the “most climactic event,” but my vote still goes to the “binoculars” story, and maybe to the “baby raccoon” story.
dflak almost 10 years ago
I love you son, just don’t do that kind of thing again.
Or as I told my kids, “How can someone so smart, do something so stupid?” It puts the emphasis on the act, not the kid.
The takeaway is: Hey, dad thinks I’m smart. Now I have to live up to that reputation.
