I’m amazed that I remember every bit of the dialog of these strips…it’s been decades.Guess that was a portent of what would become Trudeau’s success.

don’t forget the Boston busing strips where the kid forgot who was supposed to be insulted and used the wrong racial epithet — not that everybody doesn’t honk horns now and then

Same question as yesterday. Why the redux? Has Gary retired? Any idea how much longer we get these old strips?

I like the old strips. When GT starts drawing new daily strips, I hope they will run Doonesbury Classics separately, as some other strips do.

When I was in Vietnam, the common term was “Zipperheads”, or zips. I still don’t know where that came from. Same for gooks.

42 years of strips and we are getting 4 weeks from each year – sounds like about a 4 year hiatus

Intense and impulsive emotions need to be managed – that is to say, recognized, considered, expressed with special attention to who the listener is and how the feelings will be received. The expression on BD’s face after Phred gives him permission to blow off steam reveals his basic goodness and how hard it is to admit that your enemy is a human being too.

Margaret Cho has a hilarious line on people confusing her ethnicity. When someone called her “Chink” , she got all indignant and said, "Excuse me! I’m Korean; I’m not a “Chink”, I’m a gook!"

There is so much going on now, with the Supreme Court giving the nation to the oligarchs, etc., I wonder why we are going back to Vietnam. What a waste of time. C’mon Garry!

Oh c’mon, BCQueerKid must be telling us a joke! That’s a big negative stereotype of kids, that they’re not only stupid and ignorant, they’e proud of it and determined to stay that way — surely one of them wouldn’t come here just to prove the stereotype unironically true!…right?

No term is inherently dehumanizing, demeaning or insulting.“You GREEN Mr Green!”“Where you think the expression came from, kid.”“Oh.”

@Night-Gaunt49Phred has referred to himself as a terrorist, so I see no problem in calling him one. Most VC would probably identified themselves as “guerrillas” for the type of warfare they were engaged in.

I considered the word “gook” racist and never used it. Others considered it merely the descriptive word for a Vietnamese.

Then you shall remain ignorant of the history of your own country. Pitiful. We have had means to write down things for some 6,000 years. READ sometime.“I landed on this planet in 1996 and nothing of any importance ever happened before then!”—BCQueerKid

He wouldn’t dare make a new strip today where Phred is called a gook. Political correctness was not an epidemic back then!!!
