Pope Francis said last week that even atheists who do good can be redeemed. So have the Mormons traced Francis’ ancestors and inducted them as Mormons yet?The Pope is saying your soul is fine if you do good, regardless of your beliefs. So why do we need the organized religion in the first place? I don’t like it when people make unwarranted assumptions about others which may be untrue and with which the others will disagree. If you build your world on too many false assumptions, it falls apart.

Organized religions perhaps, but here’s hoping that those who believe in something more than just the here-and-now materialism of the modern world never die out. The loss of believers in faith of any kind is something to be mourned, not cheered.
Interesting comments. For my money, it is naive to think that religion will be gone in fifty or even a hundred years. It’s also naive to think if religion didn’t exist, there wouldn’t be wars or other violence. Those who tend toward violence will use whatever excuse they can to force their will. Religion for them is merely the vehicle for their desire to control others. On the other hand, many understand their faith to guide them into good, loving and selfless service of those in need, seeing people as of far more value than the almighty buck. In other words, you’ll find the good and the bad in those acting “for their religion.” And you’ll find the same is true of those who claim no religion at all. (In fact, I know quite a few fundamentalist atheists who are as certain that they have the truth as the right wing Christians). It’s silly to make claims about any religion (or philosophy or governmental system) based on the actions of one portion of its adherents. How about for now we all just try to treat each other and those around us with respect and concern?

If you want to believe that, no one, including God, is stopping you. Someday, you may find that atheism is a myth. Just because some religions may be mythical (Roman/Greek religions, etc.) does not mean that all religions are. I agree that most religions have it wrong but some religions are based on real events that happened. That alone does not make them right, but they are not “mythical.” Buddha was a historical person as was Muhammed. Just because there is no proof of God in your eyes does not mean that atheism is true.
I didn’t start this discussion. Again, I probably would not have commented on today’s comic except a few people took offense that some of us believe in the New Testament and, without provocation, started attacking and mocking that belief.
Most religions are about following rules to appease God. The New Testament teaches that God Himself took the initiative to do what man cannot do on his own: atone for the horrid evil and rebellion against God that lurks within the heart of man. That inclination within that tells us that taking advantage of someone for personal benefit is okay or that getting what I want is more important than what someone else wants. Instead of worrying about following rules and wondering if I am pleasing God, we can rest in the knowledge that “God made Him [Jesus] who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” In Christianity, we are exhorted to “…live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil.” While we [b]do[/b] follow God’s good will, these are not rules to us, they are blessings. We do not follow Him out of fear or compulsion. “We love because He first loved us.” Jesus said that the greatest commandment is to “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” So we place love for God (as revealed in the Bible and in Christ) and others above self-love and selfishness. None of us are perfect and we often fail, but we try because God’s Spirit compels and enables us to love. True, many purposely abuse Christianity and others never really subscribe to Christianity even though they claim to be Christian in name. But many Christians do as well or better than the non-believer. Regardless, it Is not about who does the best deeds. Even the best efforts are as “filthy rags” in God’s sight, because they are imperfect in intent and execution. No one seeks to truly do good on his own, not perfect good as God demands. All of us - believer and non-believer alike - fail to measure up to the standard of goodness that God’s righteousness and justice demands. But Jesus bridges that gap and makes a way for us to be pleasing to God, because when we believe in Christ’s sacrifice, His righteousness is imparted to us. We no longer have to worry about if we are “good enough;” we are free to love the best way we know how. And we who are Christians are increasingly learning how to love more generously and more effectively and selflessly through the Spirit of God.
Now, I know this probably does not change your perspective. BUT, I think I have, about as briefly as I can, stated the heart of the Gospel. The only one who has control over me, and is worthy of having control over me, is God, my Creator. While other religions make up rules to control others, Christianity at its heart is about giving control to God and God only. Jesus warned against following man’s rules: “Whoever would be my disciple must deny himself and follow after Me. For whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, while those who lose their life for Me and the Gospel will save it. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world yet lose their own soul?”
