Does anyone remember that St. Valentine’s special friend was a little girl who visited him in prison to tell him stories? It had nothing to do with romantic love at all.

In Japan Valentine’s Day is all about women showering their men with gifts. Two weeks prior is Wife’s Day in which the men publically profess their love.

Would “aunt’s girlfriend” have been less of a problem?

To the homophobes: It’s just possible that your uncle has a boyfriend. I used to have a problem with homosexual marriage – until I saw the picture of the little girl with the sign “Please let my mommies get married.” I decided that if she can deal with, who am I to complain. Grow up, people. This is reality, not just something that might happen some day. It’s here. Get over it.

I love how Mallett just casually tosses in “uncle’s boyfriend” like it’s no big deal. Because, you know, it really isn’t a big deal.

Just a wild guess here but I’m remembering that Hallmark etc. were pretty much run by men during the years that whole Valentine’s Day hoopla progressed.

It’s not always a fear of homosexuality that causes people to comment on it. Therefore, “homophobe” isn’t usually the correct response.

Wow, a comic strip that simply takes for granted the fact that we live in a world with same-sex couples, and even children take it in stride. The only thing shocking about that is that some find it shocking.

Of course, we also live in a world where same-sex couples behaving the same way in public as opposite-sex couples are accused of being “in-my-face about it”…

When I was in school there were no other gay people for hundreds of miles. At least that is what it looked like. Any compassion for what it’s like to grow up so alone? So get over it people.

Aw, poor pitiful little Max… homosexuality getting thrown in his face. Like heterosexuals don’t throw their stuff in our face all day every day.

Wedding announcements on the company bulletin board. Pictures of their babies on their desks. Women fluttering around talking about what a jerk their boyfriend was on Saturday and how they paid for it on Sunday. Men leering at the women with big chests. But let one person make a reference to a gay couple and suddenly it’s “thrown in your face”. How about you shove your face somewhere that you don’t have to look at the world?

It’s interesting how much you can raise people’s ire merely by acknowledging the existence of gay people. Not praising, not condoning, just merely acknowledging.

Hang it all. Are gays and lesbians hurting you? I mean, really hurting you? If not, leave them alone.

By the way, Puma, whatever else I might think of your opinions here, I commend you for not being on the “one-gay-reference-in-a-decade+-of-comics-ruined-it-for-me” wagon. I disagree with you more often than not, but I respect your intellect. I’m reminded of when several years ago it was reported on a local rock station that Pete Townshend had once had sex with David Bowie (or maybe it was Mick Jagger, I forget). A surprisingly high number of listeners called in to express dismay, and apparently felt that they could no longer listen to the Who. Apparently several decades of some (not all) of the greatest music in rock history was trumped by the revelation(!) that he was bi. Now that is both sad and ridiculous.
