    I know “It’s not a pipe, it’s an image of a pipe” is the common explanation and almost certainly correct, but it just seems…pedestrian (almost pedantic).

    Magritte is classed as a Surrealist, and it seems to me more surreal to say “This is not a pipe” because it IS in fact a pipe. Artistic freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two does not make four; if that is granted, all else follows.
