Thank you Mr. Johnson. Was not familiar with that tradition but it is just the sort of thing Arlo would know about, and how apropos after Saturday’s episode.

When my sister and I were little, our mother taught us how to make the little baskets by weaving together strips of several colors of construction paper, then filling with flowers and leaving tiny prepared flower baskets on the doorknobs of a few of our nearest neighbors. We lived next to an apple orchard. May first in Connecticut is awfully early to find many flowers blooming, but we knew we’d usually already have the apple blossoms, and some forsythia.

    “What? Come in.”

Not the first words I would expect.

Really never heard of this. Between Easter and Mother’s Day, it can get a little rough financially but good on Arlo (hope it’s him).

I tripped running across an old garden and got caught by Wendy Wolff, who must have been waiting just inside the door when I knocked. She got me on the cheek.

I could have used this information a couple of days ago.

I just added the URL for today’s strip to my Outlook calendar for future May Days.

I remember doing this to my favorite neighbors. I don’t think kids do this any more.

Man am I late today. I usually hit this around 12:30am but I was up late last night trying to make a dang paper basket.

I’ve never heard of that tradition. Be careful Janis, it might be from a pervert and make Arlo jealous…

If someone wakes me up there had better be a fire or blood. Anything else can wait until I’m awake.

God I hate Jimmy Johnson. He created the potential GOAT comic and simply insists on fucking it up for his own nonsensical dysfunctions. I’ll bet the goddam alligator or lizard or whatever the hell it was hung the goddam basket.

    Kiss my ass, Jim.

We did this when I was a kid. The basket was usually made out of ruffled crepe paper and had some candy in it. If you could catch the boy or girl fleeing you got to kiss him/her. I never got caught, but the cute girl from down the street let me catch her once. Ahh, memories from 1950!

I’m surprised he didn’t have a little extra fun with it: quietly hang the basket on the outside of the door, them close the door from the inside. Knock on the inside but quietly slip over next to the bed (his side) while staying out of side. Once she comes back in, he’s back in bed, apparently just responding: “What’s all the ruckus about – is something wrong?” And watching her wondering who DID leave the basket! Sounds like an Arlo thing.
