I’m officially getting weirded out here.

(Stand by for a WTF Moment)

Check the Strips starting January 12th 2015 for possible context to this current Strip.

Difference is back then, Gunny was sitting in the front seat.

This is getting unsettling. WHERE is this going?

That is a flashback to when Gunther was in Peru. I don’t know where the dream came from, but I think it is there to cover up Al’s temper exploding.

I think square one is reality. Square 2 is Gunther dreaming as they were in the cab of the tow truck being driven back home. Al/Irma’s/Les/Gunther’s home.

    Mind blown!!!

So has Gunther’s entire post-Peru life been a DREAM???

In reality, he’s still in Peru, being driven to the village by Luis, and he’s dreaming of what his life would be like if he dumped Rosa, went home, moved to the Gulag with Les and found a new GF?

The panels today are not implying that present-day Gunther is dreaming about Peru and Luis and a super-friendly Mr. Gray! It’s more the opposite!

This would be a switcheroo (as Luan1212 calls them) of ALL TIME!! And I don’t think our old friend will be pleased if this was a way to eliminate the last couple of years of Bets strips.

However commenters like Mordy (Mordock999), myself and some others would revel at the thought that a Gunther/Tiffany hookup could be back in the mix. This would be the time when Tiff was still svelte, Ann Eiffel had not happened, and Tiff & Gunther went on the Biology salamander field trip and things got steamy. But that all would have to be a do-over! It’s mind boggling!

That’s why it is probably something else. Maybe there was a wreck on the trip and Gunther is in a dream filled coma!

I think that the ONLY part that is a dream is the happy homecoming. He and Bets really DID leave on the van trip. That part was real. But while on the trip, they discovered that they’re actually incompatible with each other. He got tired of her putting their relationship on social media and they broke up, and he’s dreaming of how he wish it could’ve worked out. As for the driver? Red herring. Greg will sometimes draw the same “person”, but it’s actually a different character, with no connection to the previous incarnation.

Looks like wishy washy dream Gunther is having while riding in some car – probably a taxi since the van was kaboom. Bets is probably sitting next to him, hidden out of view. This is what he is hoping for. Irma and Al not getting upset – Irma over their misshapen appearances and kaboom van and a scowly Al paying the bill and telling Bets to never return. He is dreaming of the flip scenario which likely won’t happen.

Looks like something really sad happened. The journey has been fatal for a couple and a young man is returning alone without the signs of a great adventure on him, maybe after having left at the first difficulty. This hurts and is sad… It was really too happy, too suspiciously happy. For the second time in his life, Gunther returns alone from a trip in which he had left with the person he loved. Why? Now I want to know what happened a hundred times more than before. Fantastic strip!

I remember when Luann started in a paper in San Mateo, California in the mid 80s. It took off right away apparently. Good to see it going strong at Go Comics.

I was trying to understand why Gunther & Al would need to be in a taxi after that meeting, at first thinking Gun was only dreaming up the part about Al being a good guy. But when I noticed his shirt no longer ripped and no boo-boo on his face, no other conclusion can be drawn other than that Gunther dreamed up the whole trip. Hate when stories end like that!

The more I read the comments and this week’s strips, the more I think that the dream started with Monday’s strip. There has been a parting of ways while on the road; deja vu, since that also happened with Rosa. Perhaps Gunther was the one doing the dumping, this time. There were signs of that foreshadowed. The cabbie could just be a coincidence.

IF (a rather big if) Tiff, Lu and Gun are now all single again, as this summer’s arcs have shown, whom among the three are on a collision course?

The second panel is a dream flashback for Gunther, maybe being driven back in another vehicle. Still room for another misdirection play.

Soap opera Dallas, sometime in the 80’s I believe. Victoria Principal was killed. They brought her back with by saying her getting shot was all a dream. Pretty lame but people went with it. The same here? The whole van thing was Gunther’s dream and not a reality?

I’m unclear on what’s going on. First, I thought was Al saying this while imagining sending Gunther off asleep in a car with a random mustached-guy… which makes no sense (but is kind of hilariously dark if the “Mr. Grey is a mafioso theory” held water). But then I noticed that people are saying this is all a dream GUNTHER is having about how he wishes he was returning home… Okay, that’s actually a pretty decent subversion of expectations. Well played, Evanses, I took everything at face value.

If Gunther is coming home in a cab alone, without the van, without Bets, and WISHING that he was with her being welcomed home with even Al offering love and support…. Yeah, that as a dream compared to some bitter harsh reality! Kinda interesting! Did he and Bets have such a bad time with the van falling apart and their personalities clashes so much that it did the opposite of bringing them closer together (like he imagined in his dream) or did she fall in love with travel vlogging and he hated it and ran home while she bought the van off him and kept on riding? (I kinda hope so from a dramatic standpoint cause that would serve as a new direction to explore)

Well Gunther looks clean shaven in that last panel and he was still rocking the stubble when he came back from Peru so I’m HOPING that’s a sign he’s just dreaming and Bets is sitting beside him as they are in the tow truck heading for home. Maybe he’s just dreaming of the warm reception he hopes they will get.

Bets decided to stay in California and Irma bought Gunther a plane ticket home. Gunther always delivers his women to their ultimate destination.

Over 300 comments assuming that Gunther is having a long term dream. Greg could really be putting the screws to his readers if this is not true. Those hospitals can give you medications that will put you in a whole different world.

Something tells me they abandoned the van, and Gunther’s taking a cab back to the house…without Bets.

I just received a comment on this arc from the authors in my e-mail as a result of my having signed up for Luann Fan; it goes like this:

Hello Robin,Do you trust us? We hope so! Bets and Gunther’s road trip story is about to take a sharp U-turn and we want you, our dearest LUANN Fans, to be assured that there is a story unfolding we believe is worth telling. Life doesn’t take us in straight lines and neither has Bets and Gunther’s road trip. Buckle up! We will have more to share with our LUANN FANS in the next few days.~Karen and Greg

p.s. do you recognize the driver from today’s strip? He first showed up WAY back when Gunther when to Peru after high school graduation. Read that storyline in the Featured Collection on LuannFan.com-——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————- I now am very concerned.

    Hello Lynn,

Featured CollectionGunther is not known for being a risk-taking, adventurous sort. Maybe that’s why he’s drawn to women who get him out of his comfort zone? Check out the Featured Collection: Gunther Goes (to Peru!) to see what happened after high school (way back in 2014!!!).

Read NowRunning Out of Ideas??People often ask us if we ever run out of ideas for the strip. Nope. The characters are real people to us and the truth is they give us more stories than we can fit into the comic! The current road trip storyline is a perfect example of a time when the story idea WE had and the story our characters wanted us to tell weren’t the same. WE thought we’d send Bets and Gunther off for a fun little adventure. They told us that adventure was much more significant.

The last time Gunther did this to us was back in 2014. The characters were all graduating high school and we thought Gunther would go off to Peru with Rosa and live happily ever after, never to be seen again.

    NOPE.

As soon as Greg drew this picture, we knew we had to follow them to South America to see what happened next:

It was the same experience when we saw this strip: clearly these characters had a different story to tell than what we expected. Thanks for joining their journey—and here’s to finding out what happens next this time!

I don’t want to make predictions any more but i seem to be doing it; based on Greg & Karen’s comments and what is on the Luann Fan site, two possibilities roam around in my mind: (1) the van broke down; they ditched it and decided to hop a flight out of the country, perhaps back to Peru, (2) The first panel plus previous this week are real and Gunther is so distressed at Al’s treatment of Bets that he’s going back to Machu Picchu (a spiritual place) to mentally re-group.

It would be delightfully funny if this is the actual Luis from Peru and we find Gunther sleeping off his 1/2 beer in the back seat and all of the Gulag and Bets was a dream. But I doubt that is the case.

But, perhaps more likely is this new taxi driver (aka the new Luis) is taking Gunther back to the Gulag…. and perhaps Gunther is going back to school and Bets (being rather free-spirit-like) has decided to continue her van journey for the Fall Semester (at least) and the duo realizes they are “in love” but at least temporarily in different phases of life. Bets and Gunther can perhaps get back together (not that they broke up) when Bets returns after her Media/VanLife adventure…. perhaps in the following semester?

Or…. if Bets is going back to the dorm…. perhaps she is keeping the van at the dorm…. but Gunther came back early to get ready for school and Bets is more nonchalant about getting things ready and is just staying with family until closer to the start of the semester.

Not at all sure what’s going on here. How much is dream (or nightmare), how much is reality? Has Gunther been asleep since December 2014?!

Hah! Up above there was a comment that had me recall the series finale of “St. Elsewhere”….. where a kid was imagining the whole television series as he was gazing into a snow globe.

Maybe this is the finale for Luann…. And tomorrow will be Gunther, a college kid being dropped off at his dorm after a night out drinking, and he had dreamed up the full multi-decade of “Luann” comics ?!?!

Put that in your pipe…. yadda, yadda. :)

WOW, look at the volume of comments, today. There’s everything from a reset of a few years to a possible paternity and parallels to the Petito-Laundrie case. We even have the Evans telling us of something dark, as a form of preparation for what will be revealed in the coming days/weeks.

What of Bets and the van? Has someone’s social media obsession caused a traffic accident that cost their life? Way back when Bets first came along, I pointed out that she was an object lesson, and had made a prediction of disaster. Here we are. So many questions remain. Here’s perhaps one of the bigger ones: Was it a multiple-vehicle accident, and might one of the other parties involved be Jonah Daytona? It almost seems too tidy.

Perhaps Gunther will be revealed to be an anti-hero type; not necessarily a villain. Whom among the gals in the strip might squeal at such a thought? Not Tiff, IMHO.

Do you trust us? What a silly question for G&K to ask their readers! Of course we don’t trust them. We don’t trust them to remember any of the character back stories, we don’t trust them to ever resolve anything in their stories and we don’t trust them to be realistic and logical when describing everyday activities. We DO trust them to (among others) keep Luann in the kindergarden sandbox, Tiffany a spoiled neurotic, Bernice a psycho psychoanalyst, Gunther a mamas boy and Bets a social media junkie. It’s good to have something to count on day to day! But personally, I don’t know why anyone would go to the trouble of registering for special publications only to get a lame email. That was a fail.
