    The dreaded MeowMix Pandemic!

The Germans call such a tune an “earworm” (Ohrwurm).

This pandemic could be more pernicious than we thought: one caused by a full-fledged parasite, not a virus or a bacterium. (Anyone else reminded of Chekov in ST: THE WRATH OF KHAN or Pike in the latest ST?)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earworm

A “repetune” is a song or other musical piece stuck in one’s mind. Wanted Words, a feature on CBC Radio One’s This Morning hosted by Jane Farrow, also once asked listeners to invent a word for this phenomenon. Submitted entries included “aneurhythm” and “humbug”.[6]

Medications that are used to treat Obsessive-compulsive disorder or anxiety can alleviate the symptoms of earworms.[7]

Hmm…of course Dr. Mel and the Captain won’t realize this. :)

Probably the only time I ever laughed at a “Family Circus” was the time the father phoned the wife to complain about his “earworm”. She recommended singing it out loud to get it out of his head. Then we saw all his coworkers staring at him as he sang “Itsy-bitsy spider climbed up the water spout….”

pschearer: I remember a similar Family Circus, but the song sung was “Teenage Muntant Ninja Turtles.” I think Family Circus must have recycled the gag.

I was wondering how long it would take for the swine flu to filter through the comics’ advanced deadlines. Brewster Rockit is the first one I’ve seen.

For me it was Billy Preston’s: Outaspace. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncrROmVJT2s&feature=related

I heard that so many years ago that I forgot who performed it. It was only after Billy died that I made the connection to him and was able to track it down.

Alright, guys–here’s the antidote. You sing the song all the way through (if you know if all the way through, it not just to the part you know) and then say; ‘And that was such-and-such by so-and-so. Moving on…’ It works, every time!

Worse still: the parody of “Copacabana”, “Star Wars Cantina”. Or for that matter, any one of Weird Al’s better parodies. Once one of THOSE gets you, there’s no hope. :))
