We play Bocci Ball in a series of low dunes on Lake Michigan. If you can see the marker ball it was a bad toss. Not being able to see it makes it interesting. In the dunes, depending on how the marker ball lands, it can be anywhere it can roll…….And your balls can land close, and then roll a ways. I could never play on flat ground again…
You know how, in basketball, when a player from the visiting team is setting up for a free throw, all the home fans behind the backboard are yelling and screaming, waving pool noodles, flashing their hooters, jumping up and down, and doing everything in their power to distract the shooter? Man, if they’d let them do that in golf while a guy’s lining up a putt, I might actually be tempted to go watch a tournament.
“game” would make more sense than “sport”. Football, baseball and hockey are all games and they involve defenses. Steeplechase is a sport, and it does not involve defense (altho that could be interesting.)
Didn’t read all the comments, but in case no one else mentioned it (high jumping, a lot of other things and what TOAHERO said) this proves there is at least two really stupid golfers.
Hemingway said there are only 3 sports, bullfighting, motor racing and mountaineering, the rest are games. Where’s the defense in those? Oh I guess NASCAR has degraded motor racing to a defensive endeavor.

I always thought it wasn’t a sport if you needed a bank of judges to know who won. Judging from the Olympics, that seems to no longer be operative.

Is that full contact golf?

Lloyd and Marvin could lower handicaps by putting a bit of curve in those long-bladed putters of theirs.

Some golf courses have a natural defense. It’s the alligator defense.
The “no shoulders” defense as well.

What about target shooting, should targets be allowed to shoot back?

Extreme golf! Have football players try to tackle them as they try to make a putt.

Not nearly as much fighting as there used to be, but I’d go to see Bob Barker take on Happy Gilmore again

A lot of stuff gets called sport because you have to be one to believe it.

Hemingway had it right… “The only true (blood) sports are deep sea fishing, prize fighting, and motor racing. Everything else is merely a game.”

I have long held the belief that curling would be much more interesting if they had goalies and allowed body checking

The Defense is innate – based on man’s inability to put a little round ball in a little round hole…..

If defense is definitive, then chess is a sport, as defense is critical.

“Golf is a good walk spoiled”, often attributed to Mark Twain but never really verified. I still like the sentiment.
