Biz’s answer reminds me of the Wisconsin dairy farmer who was asked the same question by a journalist. The farmer’s response was, “Keep on farming until the money runs out!”

Sounds about right. If it weren’t for the ACA, I wouldn’t have insurance. Drop dead, 45.

You would be shocked at how many expats from the U.S.A. are becoming medical refugees – not just here in Ecuador, but in many other countries that offer affordable healthcare and reasonable prescription pricing. It is really a crime that people cannot live in their own country because they can no longer afford the high cost of medical insurance, medical treatment, and drugs.

I am 74 and my wife is 59 and we have National Health Insurance ( IESS ) that is all-inclusive and for which we pay $83 per month – $69 for my wife and $14 for me on her policy.

The times that I have had to use the system, I was very impressed not only by the efficiency and quality of the health care but in the follow-up care, as well.

We can use private clinics/doctors & dentists, and I was surprised at how reasonable the consultation and treatment costs are. (Average doctor/dentist visit is between $15 – $35).

Drugs and treatments when using IESS are free. Private doctor’s prescriptions can be filled anywhere and drugs, though tightly regulated, are surprisingly inexpensive, compared to the States.

NAILED IT!!!! All my meds are putting us in the poor house. I can’t afford to fix my stomach because of the cost so it’s Tums, Alka Seltzer & OTC drugs!
