The implied complaint is legit, imo. But we need to change SOCIETAL norms. This guy isn’t the problem, per se. He eats the news he’s fed. And he’s fed that news because editors think it will serve their bosses and advertisers better than some other story. And they think that from long experience and training at the hands of even older folks. If we fixed the PERCEPTION of all those others by the folks who spend money w/ advertisers, the problem would fix itself.
HOW to do that fix, I leave as a problem for the viewer…
it’s an unfortunate fact.. “some” are more important than others. Much like the 2012 Benghazi attack where a United States Ambassador was killed that the republicans went all ape-s**t about.. while ignoring all the others that died.
When did the US population decide that news was an entertainment function? Hey, you want mysteries, there are plenty on your library’s shelves. You don’t need to have ongoing reality shows for your news for that.
As I’ve said before, Gabby Petito grabbed our attention because there were many photos and videos of her and that guy she was with. The many other girls must not have been as cute, or had cute pix of themselves playing to be picked up by social media, and later the national new media outlets. News media is like that. They pick and choose from all the news out there and decide what to broadcast. And what is broadcast is often cute and pretty or interesting in some way, while many others stories are left on the cutting room floor. Gabby’s cutsie image caught our attention. I still regret she made the wrong choice to go out with her boyfriend to some wild environment and ended up dying. No doubt there are many other young women that make a similar mistake and pay for it with their young lives. I mourn for them, too.
And how many black men were killed by the cops before George Floyd’s murder was finally captured on video and provoked the long-overdue outrage that had already been warranted for 10,000 previous versions of the same thing? (In the “credit where it’s due” department, Darnella Frazier took that video.)
Brings to mind the old saying about needing to use a 2×4 upside the head to get someone’s attention first.
I thought that all the coverage for Gabby was a bit over the top, but I’m now glad it was. It seems to have brought about more of a focus on how much effort went into finding her, versus how much less effort goes into finding other missing persons—both minorities and whites. The other day, the family and relatives of Gabby had a press conference, and one of them said that, not only law enforcement should up their game with all missing persons, but so should the media. So, hopefully, things will change for the better.
Nothing new there. The media only cares about missing rich white people. If she were, pardon the expression, white trash, she wouldn’t be in the media either.
