A plugge will also remember the smart aleck older brother or sister that sent him on that snipe hunt in the first place. :D

As a camp counselor in the late seventies, my co-counselor and I took ten 12 year olds to the dark and scary woods. Everyone had flashlights, but we were doing a dark acclimatization exercise, so we all had them turned off. (You can see surprisingly well in the dark when you let your eyes adapt.) The plan involved a shriek and some ketchup, but never reached fruition. We walked up on a screech owl, who screeched. Spent the next half hour finding all the kids.

Mine was in a cornfield abutting our property. It was twilight and I was about 8-9 years old. When I realized everyone left and it was eerily quiet I realized I had been had and walked home. I was thrilled when I did come upon my first Wilson’s Snipe a few miles from where I live. Got to view it for at least 15 minutes and observe it.

But the joke turns out to be on the prankster because there is such a bird. Snipe – A wading bird of marshes and wet meadows, with brown camouflaged plumage, a long straight bill, and typically a drumming display flight.

When I first saw this cartoon, I thought he was going to try “To Catch a Falling Star”.

A wily beast, the snipe, which can only be described as somewhere between mythical and apocryphal.

Later in life, we sent rookie telephone switch room techs for a bucket of dial tone.

The first snipe hunt is usually the last as the hunter.

Probably only Pluggers still remember those. I think I just missed being taken for one when I was young, and I haven’t heard of anybody doing it since then.
