If she paid as much attention to the baseball as she does the soccer ball, her team could win a few games.

Lucy will grow up to stab the neighbour kids’ erring balls with a butcher knife, preferably in front of the kids. Like my mother’s neighbour did.

Football, soccer ball, baseball, soccer ball, tennis ball, golf ball, hockey puck, bowling ball, pool ball, ping pong ball, and medicine ball. Next, they’ll throw a bocce ball for an encore.

Must be a rare instance when a ball knocks over Lucy instead of the ball knocking over Charlie Brown.

At least she didn’t lose her clothes as happens to Charlie Brown in such situations.

Obviously Shultz didn’t grow up in Brooklyn. The only place to play in Brooklyn in the 1950s was in the street. There was only so much “street” for 300 or so kids who lived on the block to play on. The street was just big enough for two stickball games to go on simultaneously without interfering too much with each other

Stickball was a bit like Calvinball: we had a number of strange ground rules based on various obstacles in the street such as what to do if a ground ball went under a car or down the sewer. For the latter, the ultimate answer was to “fish it out and bounce it ‘clean’” but the question was how many bases to award for it or did it count as a foul ball.

Also the alignment of the field and the position of the bases depended on what cars were parked where.

I don’t know how the decision was made on how to divide the turf. It was partially based on what sport was being played.

But we only had three kinds of “balls:” football (rare), hockey puck (for the roller version of the sport – but hockey sticks were rare) and the ubiquitous spalldeen that was used in dozens of different games besides stickball.

Lucy made a decent point, but the comeuppance was justified because of how she treats everyone else – especially outside the field.

Could this be Charles Schulz’s opinion of baseball? Or what his opinion was?

This is hilariously funny because it’s one of the rare times Lucy wound up on the losing end.

    A hockey puck in summertime??
