One bad thing (among many) about getting lined up is that the intermediary doesn’t take any thought to it, aside from “Hey they’re both single. I need to pair them off.”

Have I mentioned that I think unsolicited matchmakers are the scum of the earth? :D :D :D

Yeah, Jan, Title IX is SO wonderful. It has resulted in the elimination almost everywhere of gymnastics, swimming, and wrestling for guys, including at U. of Oregon! Isn’t that great?

Now, I as a Harvard Law grad and former EEO lawyer for a big company, have an idea I think no one else has thought of! Let me see what you think. (Love your comic strip, BTW, especially as a Eugenian!)

First, let me say my sister was an early-on champion debater, a chemistry grad of Stanford, first in her class at Berkeley Law, this in the 60s—!—now law prof at Oregon after coming back—also was FIRST female law prof at Duckville!, so I have been taking success for women for granted for a LONG time—am 10 years younger than she—she was sort of a surrogate Mom when I was young. My main advisers in grad and law school were also women.

Here’s my idea, based on my work: I think it is tragic that morally formative men’s sports have been eliminated by Title IX. BUT, I favor gender equality in all college activities.

SO, my idea: under the Equal Pay Act, the wages of males cannot be lowered in order to bring their wages and the wages of women into parity. So, why can’t Title IX be amended to say the same?

That way, small-time, character-building sports for men can be saved, rather than eliminated (as recently happened to Oregon’s men’s wrestling), women’s sports can be brought up to equality, and the big god, football, can pay for both!

    Regards,

    Greg Bader, zardoz248@aol.com

People need to learn to leave well enough alone. My sister tried to fix me up on a group date not long ago and it all fell a part on her when the the girl showed up with her boyfirend.. I was rolling laughing but of course not even that has stopped her she is trying to get me to ask her friends cousin out now….she will never learn ….

You’re right Phil. Dig your heels in. Don’t let her make you do it. Of course, you’re toast either way. She’ll set up a party, invite them both and it’ll somehow be all your fault.

Doesn’t it ever occur to some of these well-meaning matchmakers that some people are NOT looking to be paired off?

Sereaskitty I do agree with you. When I met my future husband not due to matchmaking. He seen me before I seen him and feel in love.

When your friend’s wives try to fix you up, it reveals how they had considered YOU as a romantic prospect, and it ain’t pretty…

Hate to be a fly in the ointment, but my office mate in my first full-time teaching job recommended “Mr. T,” a man she’d known since they were two. She’d dated him a bit, but then became engaged to somebody else. She thought we’d be a great match, but wasn’t pushy. After nearly fifty-two years of marriage to Mr. .T , I’ll have to admit that she was right.
