However ‘trite but true’, I like this one – Why did the chicken cross the road?To show the possum it could actually be done. (So, now, I have a mental image of Danae grinning mischievously next to a “sheep Xing” sign.)

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence… However, your mom can deduce you did not, in fact, have any sandwiches on days when there were no crumbs on the counter because there was no lunch meat removed from the fridge: hence, evidence of absence!

Actually, it doesn’t even tell us where, only where they can do it legally. Chickens are such birdbrains that they often jaywalk.

While we’re on the subject, how does an animal know where to cross? They can’t read.

In Florida, we need “Geezer Xing” signs. They don’t know why they crossed the road either.

Artybee – The reason you’ve never seen a possum that made it all the way across the road is that THEY’RE ACROSS THE ROAD, hiding in the bushes on that side!

Fantastic . . . I’m glad it enriched your life. My point is that it seems a little arbitrary to single out roctor, especially without addressing the content of his/her comment, but no one else.

Such signs would be more effective and answer more questions if they literally stuck them on the animals themselves.

They were built from the top down. I saw this on History Channel last week right after the special programming on man-made global warming but before the hour long program proving that Big Foot evolved from Al Gore.

mightaswellbe: Possums faint; armadillos jump up. It is their defense against coyotes – wait until the last moment, jump vertically, the coyote runs under it, then runs off in the opposite direction. The top speed of both is about the same, so the armadillo has a head start.

At first I thought the thing was a duck, or some kind of mythical fowl with chicken feet and a duck’s bill. Then I figured out the significance of the text in the rectangle and realized it was a chicken.

    Do chickens have lips? No!

    Can chickens whistle? No!

Why did the chicken walk across the road?

Because he had to. With no lips and no whistle, he couldn’t call a taxi.

Personally, I welcome corrections provided they aren’t mean-spirited. I would rather have an error in grammar or usage pointed out to me so that I could correct it in the future than to plod on through life blissfully unaware, repeating the same mistakes.

What a coincidence. I saw a bird on the road this morning as I rode in a carpool. A car looked like it tried to avoid it, but ran right over it. Then the bird flew up and almost hit the windshield of the car I was in. I wouldn’t have believed it had I not seen it. I always assumed (had I ever stopped to think about it) that a run-over bird would be road kill. True story.
